Owls Rest

Sulby, Northamptonshire

Totally private and isolated from noise, a great little place for outdoorsy types – anglers, ornithologists, walkers and adventure seekers

2 bedrooms

Sleeps 4

At the far end of three fields is Owls Rest, a solid log house, with the Sulby Reservoir to the front and the Jurassic Way to the right. The views are delightful and there’s not a building in sight, apart from the little solar hut. The logs, of warm rich Canadian Western Red Cedar, were shipped down from York and reconstructed, while the interior has been completely refitted: a sweep of wooden flooring, a super wet room, a bright central kitchen. Being off-grid your cabin is eco-friendly to a fault: wool insulates the walls, sun powers the electricity, a pellet boiler keeps you snug. Colourful cushions and tiles add a cheerful touch, shaded lights a homely feel, French windows lead to levels of decking and the sink faces the lake so the washer-upper gets the view. You can hire bikes and sailing boats at Pitsford Reservoir – a nature-rich spot ten miles away – and canal boats at North Kilworth Marina or Foxton Locks, both great places for a family day out. Then it’s home to comfy, top-notch mattresses, luxurious White Company linen and marvellous star-studded skies.
