Sarah’s home is set in the grounds of Heydon, one of Norfolk’s finest Elizabethan houses. In the Dutch-gabled stable block, fronted by Cromwell’s Oak, is her cottage – fresh, sunny and enchanting. Each room is touched by her warm personality and love of beautiful things: seagrass floors, crisp linen and pretty china; the cosy sitting room is set with tea and biscuits for your arrival. Bedrooms are cottagey and immaculate; bathrooms have baskets of treats. Sarah serves a delicious breakfast with golden eggs from her hens, homemade marmalade and garden fruit. Thursford is close and you’re 20 minutes from the coast.

This cottage and the village of Heydon are an English rural idyll - it feels like a film set of a Merchant Ivory production, with your host Sarah as leading lady! We will return for a definite sequel!

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Sarah Bulwer-Long

  • Heydon is one of the prettiest villages in Norfolk and is set in a corner of Heydon Hall park. It’s one of less than a dozen privately owned villages in Great Britain and became Norfolk’s first conservation area in 1971.
  • Stable Cottage is conveniently located for day trips to inland and coastal attractions including the North Norfolk coast, with its big skies and sandy beaches, and the wetlands and waterways of the Norfolk Broads National Park.
  • The city of Norwich and inland market towns of Reepham, Aylsham and Holt are also within a short drive.
  • Nearby stately homes and gardens include Blickling Hall, Mannington Gardens, Felbrigg Hall, and East Runton Old Vicarage Gardens.
  • Pensthorpe Natural Park, Cley Marshes, Blakeney Point, and Foxley Wood offer great days out for wildlife and bird watching enthusiasts and BeWILDerwood and Dinosaur Adventure Park offer fun activities for all the family.
  • Nearby walking and cycling trails include the Marriott’s Way, Bure Valley Path, and Weaver’s Way and the Bure Valley Railway, Whitwell & Reepham Railway, and North Norfolk Railway offer steam train rides through the Norfolk countryside.
