Pootle down a peaceful country road through fields where horses quietly graze to an 1880s Norfolk farmhouse with a glorious garden behind. Little Barn, attached but utterly private, comes with a history: a lawyer from London, fleeing the Great Plague, built a house in little Briston – or so the story goes. Inside, all is immaculate, generous, homely and welcoming – two floors linked by a sweet curved stair. You enter the well-equipped dining-kitchen, and step down to a gorgeous sitting room (exposed stone wall, fat sofas, curvy wood-burner). Then a small bathroom, and a beamed comfortable bedroom… after a day of blowy walks, crabbing, bird and seal watching or exploring nearby Norwich – this is the sort of room you’d love to come home to. There are books, TV, CDs galore, and a beautifully beamed twin at the top of the stair, with a curtained-off section for clothes. French windows open to your own piece of garden, and you are free to roam the rest. Stock up in Briston (one mile) or explore historic Holt. Sally and Ken, garden designers both, could not be more welcoming.

The most perfect retreat. lovely cottage and Sally and Ken have thought of everything to make Little Barn so comfortable. Cosy and warm, comfy bed, charming garden and lots of space to relax in. Little Barn is in a very pretty part of Norfolk with lots to see and do locally, lovely walks and the perfect cottage to return to after a bracing autumn walk. We had just a short break but loved every minute.

Our last visit was the 10th time we have stayed at Little Barn , which must speak volumes on it's own!! The cottage has everything you could wish for and the garden is beautiful. The owners, Sally and Ken are always welcoming and really helpful. The beach at Wells next to the sea is a short drive away with its miles of sand. The Georgian town of Holt is nearby and supermarkets are easy to find in the vicinity. There are a number of Pubs and eateries nearby producing some excellent dining. I cannot praise Little Barn too highly we will be returning next year for our 11th visit.

Evelyn, Chelmsford

We stay at Little Barn regularly, three summers and Easter. We absolutely love it there, accommodation is very comfortable, kids love it, amazing garden, peaceful and owners are absolutely delightful. We will be back again!!

Maree, Bishops stortford

This was our second visit to Little Barn and we loved it just as much as the first! The cottage is very comfortable, well organised and well-equipped. The garden is beautiful and it is quiet and peaceful. There is tons to do in Norfolk for fine or rainy weather and something for all ages. The owners are on hand to help if you need it. Thoroughly recommended.

Imogen, Edinburgh

Peaceful, relaxing and tranquil, this cottage is excellently equipped. It's our fourth visit and we should really be keeping this wonderful secret to ourselves !! John & Joy

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Sally Holmes

  • Little Barn is in the middle of Norfolk in a quiet, rural location surrounded by fields. Set off in any direction, you will find something to interest you. History, art, wildlife, cafes & pubs, walking. See what you can find. Coffee in Holt is a good start.
  • Norfolk is full of history. Experience the Viking and Middle Ages at Norwich Castle & Cathedral, as well as the many rural Saxon & Norman churches, reputedly 600! A trip on the Poppy line from Holt to Sheringham takes you back to the Steam Age.
  • Enjoy the abundant wildlife at the Pensthorpe, Titchwell and RSPB nature reserves. Take a boat trip from Blakeney or Morston to see the seals at Blakeney Point. Spend the day on one of the lovely beaches, or step out on a bracing coastal walk.
  • There are some interesting tea shops to visit. The Village Store in Itteringham has been trading since 1637! Try the award winning tea shop in the quaint village of Heydon, the eccentric Dial House in Reepham. Great coffee in the Black Apollo in Holt.
  • There are many gardens to visit. Houghton, Blickling and Felbrigg all have wonderful walled gardens and walks at any time of year. The Old Vicarage at East Ruston is inspiring and full of ideas for gardeners. There are also open gardens in season.
  • The whole family will enjoy adventure days at the magical world of Bewilderwood or the Jurassic world of the Dinosaur Park near Norwich. Explore the Priory Maze near Sheringham, or cycle safely with the family at Blickling or Holkham.
