This tranquil cottage is next to open fields and Hindringham Hall’s gorgeous gardens, 12th-century moat and medieval pond. The barn was converted after the war for the head herdsman, Mr Docking, who lived here with his bride.
Inside, amuse yourself with games, books and cards next to the cosy wood-burner. Outside, light the barbecue and admire the roses in the enclosed garden while you cook supper, or there’s a tennis court you’re welcome to use on prior arrangement. Gardeners will love visiting the Hall grounds, which are open on Wednesday mornings and Sunday afternoons between April and the end of September.
A bridle path for walks leaves from the door, and the North Norfolk coast is only ten minutes’ drive – take the dogs to wide sands of Holkham and Wells-next-the-Sea, and the enticing aromas of Stiffley Marshes. Don’t miss the six pretty villages called the Burnhams near Brancaster, the best-known being Burnham Market. There are also five stately homes nearby: Blickling Hall, Felbrigg Hall, Sandringham House, Houghton Hall, Oxburgh Hall.
