The Experience

Lawn, shrubs and wild flowers frame this delightful cottage on the edge of the Blickling Estate; behind is a south-facing garden with decking and seating from which to view oaks, meadows and cows. It is blissfully secluded – little traffic, just the odd moo – yet you are on the outskirts of a village and two miles from Aylsham. Enter to find a light, bright living space, open to a pitched beamed roof, perfect in every way, with a steepish narrow stair to the gallery above (mind your head!) and double doors to the garden. Owners Melanie and Nigel have beautifully combined elegance with character and old with new. Find a wood-burner in the fireplace for chilly nights, a great little kitchen for cooks, and warm splashes of red in rugs, cushions and gingham. French embroidered curtains distinguish the bathroom downstairs, and the bedroom is under heavily pitched eaves: a delicious bed, an antique coffer, a green view. Close by there’re lots of lovely places to eat and there’s a Slow Food festival in October. Note: there’s a single bed in the dressing room downstairs.

A wonderful rural retreat! Acorn Cottage is truly delightful - even more so in person than in pictures! My partner and I enjoyed a long weekend at the cottage, which is tucked away among fields. The cottage is perfectly positioned, near beautiful attractions like Blickling Hall, and only a short drive from Norwich or the coast.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Nigel Slater & Melanie Leach

  • Blickling Hall, National Trust House & gardens, drive, cycle or walk. Events through the year including summer concerts. Not to be missed.
  • Heydon Village, close by English estate village lost in time. Walk through the park and glimpse the House. Good destination for a bike ride. Picnic on the green or Earle Arms for lunch & dinner, not forgetting the teashop.
  • Georgian Holt for shopping, coffee, lunch at Byfords Delicatessen & Café, shop in Larner’s foodhall, the Harrods of Norfolk. Independent shops, art galleries & antiques. Excellent fish shop for locally caught fish, lobster, crab etc.
  • Mannington & Wolterton Hall & Gardens. Home of Lord and Lady Walpole. 2 miles up the road from Itteringham. Check for opening times and events. Amazing cakes at the Greedy Goose café, Mannington.
  • Boat trip from Morston to view seals off Blakeney Point. Be sure to stop off on the Point and ask to catch a later boat back if you can. Walk away from the crowds and over the dunes, where you will have the big skies and sands all to yourself.
  • Blakeney harbour and view for a leisurely stroll along the quay, crabbing, picnic, boats, walks, lunch, supper.
