Sarah and Anthony have brought this listed house back from the brink with style and a real passion for the place. The old bones: dark beams, stone mullion windows and ornate carvings, flatter the contemporary luxury of the interiors. The four (more are planned) sophisticated bedrooms have a calm, light-grey colour scheme, excellent mattresses on King-size beds, one has a working fireplace, the suite can fit an extra two guests, all have Nespresso machines. The en-suite bathrooms are fabulous: double-ended tap-free baths with music at the touch of a button, and great showers. Twice a month they host six-course Gourmet Evenings in the chandeliered dining room, perhaps you’ll try rump and belly of lamb with wilted baby gem lettuce followed by jasmine mousse with cherry soup and lavender biscuits. Seriously good food – as seasonal, foraged and local as possible – is served at breakfast too, with linen and vintage china, at one table in the ‘small’ dining room. There’s a smorgasbord of craft gins to sample at the bar and the grounds are being beautifully restored. Marvellous.
