Abbots Oak Manor

Coalville, Leicestershire

Sumptuous six-course Gourmet Evenings, craft gin at the bar & smart bedrooms. You’re near Leicester Cathedral & Mount St Bernard Abbey

Sarah and Anthony have brought this listed house back from the brink with style and a real passion for the place. The old bones: dark beams, stone mullion windows and ornate carvings, flatter the contemporary luxury of the interiors. The eight sophisticated bedrooms have a calm, light-grey colour scheme, excellent mattresses on King-size beds, one has a working fireplace, the suite can fit an extra two guests, all have Nespresso machines. The en-suite bathrooms are fabulous: double-ended tap-free baths with music at the touch of a button, and great showers. In the chandeliered dining room, perhaps you’ll try rump and belly of lamb with wilted baby gem lettuce followed by jasmine mousse with cherry soup and lavender biscuits. Seriously good food – as seasonal, foraged and local as possible – is served at breakfast too, with linen and vintage china, at one table in the ‘small’ dining room. There’s a smörgåsbord of craft gins to sample at the bar and the grounds are being beautifully restored. Marvellous.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Sarah Kurr

  • Probably one of the highest residential houses in Leicestershire and probably the highest hotel. Spectacular views down the valley and onto Barden Hill.
  • Cosy rooms with real open fires. Home cooked locally sourced foods. Masterchef finalist Paul Leary with his special Gourmet events.
  • Bosworth Battle field- the battle field site where Richard III fought for his life and eventually lost his crown. Richard III exhibition, Leicester.
  • On the edge of Charnwood Forest National Park and Bradgate Park. Stoneywell House. National Space Centre. Donnington Park and Mallory Race Circuits. Warwick and Belvoir castles.
  • The Great Central Railway, Quorn, Rothley, Loughborough. Market Harborough, Foxton Locks, Melton Mowbray. East Midlands Airport 15 mins.
  • You may be lucky enough to spot one of our visiting Fallow Deer, or timid Muntjac Deer, out of your bedroom windows. Also, commonly seen: badger, rabbits and foxes. Beautiful south facing gardens.
