On a really good day (about once every year) you can see France. But you’ll be more than happy to settle for the superb views over Romney Marsh, the Channel in the distance. The big, friendly house, built in 1845, has impeccable, elegant bedrooms and good bathrooms; the large, many-windowed sitting room is full of books, pictures and flowers from the south-facing garden. Marion and David are both charming and can organise transport to the Channel Tunnel for you. It’s remarkably peaceful – perfect for walking (right on the Saxon Shore path), cycling and bird watching.

A place of quietness and calm, with fresh flower arrangements and restful bedrooms and sitting room. Very helpful and welcoming owners and a friendly golden retriever! We stayed 3 nights and explored Romney Marsh and its ancient churches, enjoying homemade food at the Ferry Inn. We took the scenic train ride to Eastbourne (& so had a rest from driving) for the Towner Gallery and their excellent Ravilious exhibition. The Old Rectory is not far from Ashford, but a world away.

What a lovely, relaxing three-day break we had here. Excellent breakfast, lovely garden with quite beautiful views, close to good country pubs, kind and helpful hosts, good walking, good shopping, really beautiful countryside. In fact, the perfect place to take yourself off to if you're in real need of a break. Thank you very much Marion and David.

Clare, Woking

Charming hosts, delicious breakfast and very comfortable room. Also perfect for catching the Channel Tunnel train as it is only half an hour away.

Gilly, Holbrook

We stayed at this delightful BandB on our way back home to France to save the nightmare of the M25 on a Bank holiday weekend. We were welcomed by our charming hosts and given afternoon tea in a lovely cosy sitting room . Our ensuite bedroom was quiet, warm and had very comfortable beds. Breakfast was delicious and our trip to the Tunnel took only 30 minutes. We shall definitely be back!

Gilly, St siffret

Perfect stay, a quintessential English country house with a garden to die for, full of summer glory. Very comfortable rooms with tea and coffee provided - and we were welcomed with tea in the garden when we arrived. Very helpful and kind hosts who gave us excellent recommendations for supper on two nights. Both these required a drive, but were well worth it.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Marion & David Hanbury

  • Within an hour's drive are the famous gardens of Sissinghurst, Great Dixter, Godington House, Goodnestone Park; the castles of Leeds, Bodiam, Walmer, Deal and Dover; wildlife parks of Port Lympne and Howletts; nature reserves and beaches of Romney Marsh.
  • The cathedral city of Canterbury and historic towns of Hythe, Rye and Tenterden; the Kent and East Sussex Railway from Tenterden and the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch narrow-gauge railway are all within three-quarters of an hour.
  • The Channel Tunnel is only 30 minutes away, and the high-speed train from Ashford makes central London easily accessible within one hour.
  • You may leave your car with us in perfect safety - plenty of room in our drive, well off the quiet country lane.
  • Because of family commitments, we are always "fully booked" over the Christmas and New Year holiday season.
  • For walkers, we are within 200 yards of the Saxon Shore long distance path, and about 900 yards from the Royal Military Canal. Alas, our local pub in Ruckinge is now closed, but we can usually arrange a lift to nearby pubs.
