The Hermitage

Canterbury, Kent
Bed & Breakfast

Independent North Downs barn studio/bedroom with space to spread out. Star-filled skies, valley views, tubs of flowers, generous breakfasts

1 room

Rooms sleep 2

Green oak, black weatherboards, Kent peg tiles and traditional outside steps up to your retreat… this looks like an old converted barn but was built in 2008. The studio/bedroom has a seating area with TV, inviting linen on a snug bed under the eaves; fridge, biscuits, sweets and prosecco too. Tina’s arty workshop is below; electricity and hot water are solar-powered, rainwater recycled. Lots of breakfast choices: in your room or over in Tina and Doug’s dining room; she’s an avid jam-maker, eggs are from their hens, bacon from the farmer across the lane. Sun trap terraces and views; walks start from the door and Canterbury is close.

I had a lovely stay here with my wife as a pre Christmas trip to Canterbury. This is a beautiful barn conversion set in gorgeous rolling countryside. The owners, Doug and Tina were wonderful and couldn't do enough to make our stay a lovely experience. Incredibly comfortable bed and very tasteful decor. Excellent facilities. We chose to have warm croissants and hot coffee brought to us in the morning. Very peaceful and relaxing stay. We will definitely book again !

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Tina & Doug Chandler

  • Location is everything, and we want to share ours with you during your stay at The Hermitage. Just south of the UNESCO World Heritage City of Canterbury, once inside the City walls you will enjoy everything an ancient Cathedral City has to offer.
  • The Port of Dover has been called “The Key to England”. From The Hermitage you can be at the gates of Dover Castle in just 25 minutes. From the top of its Great Tower you will have panoramic views up and down the Straights of Dover and across to France.
  • The Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway is just 29 minutes from The Hermitage and is a delightful piece of English eccentricity. A public railway with 1/3 scale steam engines running on 15” wide track from Hythe across Romney Marsh to Dungeness.
  • Less than six miles from The Hermitage is the largest herd of African Elephants in the UK! The World famous Howletts Wild Animal Park also runs a highly successful breeding programme for the critically endangered Western Lowland Gorilla.
  • If you would rather explore our neighbourhood on foot we have miles and miles of Public Footpaths and Bridleways for you to enjoy. The rolling chalk Downland rewards the keen walker with ever changing scenery, breathtaking views and great local Pubs.
  • Our B&B annexe also houses Tina’s design studio. If “making stuff” is your idea of a good time why not join one of her courses and learn about traditional letterpress printing, make your very own hand-made book or master the art of decorative box-making.
