Medley Court at Hever Castle

Edenbridge, Kent

This grand cottage in the grounds of 13th-century Hever Castle – once home to Anne Boleyn – is a perfect spot for family gatherings

Hever is hard to beat, a moated castle that was home to Anne Boleyn. It sits in 625 acres of formal gardens that start at your back door and which are yours to roam wherever you like. As for this stunning timber-framed house, it was built in Tudor style to fit its landscape and stands between the castle and the river Eden. It’s grand, yet homely, a delightful spot for families or friends who want to gather in style. You’ll find chic sofas and a roaring fire in the panelled sitting room; a family breakfast table in the beautiful kitchen; then an airy dining room with a mahogany table and noble souls on the walls. Bedrooms – a couple on the ground floor, a twin for children above  – are delightful: half-testers, crisp linen, regal colours, beautiful fabrics. Bathrooms are just as good, perhaps a claw-foot bath or a sparkling power shower; all have white robes. Welcome hampers have bacon and eggs, tea and coffee, a cake and a bottle of wine. You can eat on a shaded terrace at the back looking across to the castle, a fine spot in good weather. Porters come to light the fires, a chef can be arranged if you don’t want to cook. Brilliant.
