The Experience

Buddle Place is on the southern-most tip of the island with huge sea views. This is a spectacular spot for walking, with dramatic cliffs and lush vegetation.

Your 19th-century stone coach house has been converted into a comfy, one-floor escape with those wake-up views out to sea through the picture window. The open-plan living and kitchen space is convivial – rustle up meals while you chat, dine at the big table, or out on the terrace, read by the wood-burner. The master bedroom has an en suite, the twin bedrooms share the family bathroom.

Walk to Castle Haven harbour for a dip or drive to the big beach at nearby Ventnor; long sandy beaches a bit further away are Sandown and Shanklin. Your garden is a leafy suntrap and you can pop round the corner to the famous Buddle Inn for dinner.

Reviews

This was our second visit to the stables and we hope to return again. It has everything you need for a great comfortable stay. It has a great enclosed safe pretty garden, the property is very spacious and light. The beds are very comfortable and the dog is welcome, so really home from home. Mark & Jay are great helpful hosts. The property is in a very beautiful part of the Island. We would definitely recommend a visit. If there are more of you, you can rent the Barn next door.

We had an absolutely fantastic stay! The cottage is beautiful, with a lovely child friendly garden and sea views. Jay was a fabulous host, providing a travel cot and even two stokke seats for our children. We loved walking down to St Catherine’s Lighthouse to fly kites. I’d highly recommend The Stable.

Lauren, Bristol

This is a really lovely rental in a great location. The weather wasn't so good when we visited (off the back of Storm Eunice), but we enjoyed relaxing in the property in between trips out. Very comfortable!

Jane, London

We stayed for a week at Buddle Place at the beginning of September. It’s really nicely appointed, very comfortable and has great communal space so perfect for a family. Will definitely return.

Daniel, London

We had a wonderful first visit to the Isle of Wight, staying at this delightfully styled property, being comfy, very well laid out and with a kitchen containing excellent equipment. The setting is on a very quiet road and close to the sea, with wonderful walks. Mark and Jay are very affable hosts. We would thoroughly recommend a stay here.

Flic, Lutterworth

This was our second stay in the stable and we enjoyed it very much, despite the wider restrictions on the island due to the COVID-19 outbreak. We were limited in terms of places to go and visit. However, The Stable was warm and welcoming, as was Jay & Mark. The cottage is laid out beautifully and in a superb, quiet location. The garden is lovely with a distant sea view. Our dog Ted enjoyed his daily walks to St Catherine’s lighthouse and across the fields which are a short stroll away. I would highly recommend The Stable and look forward to our future visits there.

Pauline, St Albans

We had a lovely relaxing week at The Stable: the perfect escape. Beautifully restored, the cottage is light, elegant, comfortable and cosy. Our exceptionally thoughtful hosts not only provided milk, snacks and wine but tasteful Christmas decorations too; and the highlight was enjoying the wood burning stove while rain lashed at the windows! Thoroughly recommended.

Sheila, Letchworth Garden City

The Stable was the perfect place to unwind; beautifully laid out, comfy beds, lovely views and within walking distance of great walks across fields to the beach. There were really thoughtful touches like a travel cot already set up for our baby, biscuits awaiting our arrival and a brilliantly equipped games cupboard. The house is really well located for exploring the south coast of the island and we loved finding uncrowded beaches, a pop-up wood-fire pizza van and ice creams on Yarmouth Pier. Thank you Jay & Mark for a wonderful stay. We'll be back again!

Lucy, London

Just returned from the most relaxing few days at The Stable, Buddle Place. The spacious property is beautifully designed. Everything one could possibly need is provided for. No worries about staying here in the colder months - it's toasty warm at all times even before lighting the lovely wood-burner. It's located in a quiet village with wonderful walks outside the front door. It's also in a perfect position to visit other areas of the island. There's lots to see and do but you may find it hard to drag yourself away from the calmness of The Stable.

Antonia, Surrey

We stayed in the Barn at Buddle Place and had the best time on the Isle of Wight. The cottage for four people was cosy, comfortable and the perfect place to relax (particularly by the fire place). It is located in a small town close to the sea. The cottage was well equipped and ideally located to explore the key attractions of the island. Jay and Mark were lovely hosts! We highly recommend!

Denise, London via Australia

We enjoyed a wonderful 3 night break within this delightful old fisherman's cottage which has been renovated to the highest of standards, decorated in muted tones and bright whites. Spacious, practical and replete with a superb wood burner, it made for an extremely relaxing stay for a young family of four. The cottage is superbly located just a step away from outstanding coastal paths with the sort of views you can only really enjoy from this spectacular part of the Isle of White. The owner Jay was very friendly and helpful with great comms. We will definitely be back.

Location

The neighbourhood

The microclimate in this part of the island is mild and the walks are many and marvellous. Join the coastal path, pop down to Castle Haven harbour for a dip (15-minute walk). Drive the five miles to atmospheric Steephill Cove for paddling and local crab and lobster. Blackgang Chine is three miles away, Ventnor five; Sandown and Shanklin beaches are 10 miles. Just a two-minute walk to the famous Buddle Inn – an old smugglers’ haunt dating from 1550, serving good food (Sunday roasts, locally reared beef, local bread and sausages, IOW tomato bruschetta, vegetarian options) and real ales.

Local points of interest from Jay Lowein

  • St Catherines Lighthouse is a few hundred yards away, eat by the sea at True Food Kitchen Castlehaven or take a swim from the slipway.
  • Walk up to 'The Pepperpot' on St Catherines Down - Britain's only surviving medieval lighthouse. There are spectacular views from here to the mainland & all around the island. Extend your walk 2 miles further to the Hoy Monument.
  • Visit nearby Ventnor Botanical Gardens nestled in the Undercliff with its unique micro climate. Sub tropical plants, normally under glass, thrive outdoors here. Stop for lunch at the Edulis restaurant or Plantation Room cafe.
  • There are coastal paths within walking distance of the house, part of the island's 500 mile network. The National Trust own the farmland leading down to the lighthouse below & cliff paths take you west towards Freshwater Bay or east towards Ventnor.
  • Enjoy the beach at nearby Steephill Cove, only accessible on foot & have lunch there at the Crab Shack ( try Mandy's famous crab pasties ) Their are kayaks for hire to paddle around the cove.
  • Explore Ventnor 10 minutes drive away. There is an excellent swimming beach, independant shops, pubs & good restaurants. During August Ventnor has its own Fringe Festival, a week of events including music, theatre & film.

Introducing

Jay Lowein

Jay and Mark live on site in the farmhouse so are on hand to welcome visitors and deal with any problems. They managed the conversions of The Barn and The Stable and they’re retired now so can focus on looking after their self-catering spaces. They’re friendly and helpful and know and love the area having lived here for many years.
