The attractive brick Yew Tree stands beside the A343 south of the village and is perfect for visiting Highclere Castle (of Downton Abbey fame). A contemporary makeover stitches a rambling dining room into the old fabric of this 16th-century building, all inglenooks, timbers and uncluttered walls. Expect an elegant air, cracking log fires, rugs on red and black tiled floors, glowing candles on old dining tables, leather wall benches and wing chairs. From the beautiful copper-topped bar order great coffee or a pint of Upham ale and peruse the papers in a cosy corner. The best of British food is championed here: carpaccio of Trinley Estate White Park beef; cumin-spiced Faccombe partridge with turmeric and coriander rice, Brixham plaice with lemon brown butter; baked plum and mulled apple crumble. Cottagey rooms are compact and come with beams, statement William Morris wallpaper, tartan blankets, the finest linen and down, and fresh bathrooms with storm showers and bathrobes; ground floor rooms have dog beds and water bowls.
