The Woolpack Inn

Alresford, Hampshire

It’s hard to fault this lovely little inn, deep in the Candover Valley. Its brick and flint exterior dates to 1880, views shoot across fields to a distant church, and there are terraces to the front and the side. Dogs doze by the fire, walkers and cyclists quench their thirst with pints of Woolpack, and shooting parties drop in by season. It’s been refurbished in style, so expect striped banquettes and high-backed leather chairs in the dining room and a nice woody feel in the bar. The seasonal menu has a broad appeal, ranging from pub classics like burgers with smoked cheddar and Heineken-battered fish to more modish dishes like confit pork belly with potato gratin, and – of course! – game sourced within five miles. Sunday lunch is madly popular – don’t forget to book. Hike, bike, visit Winchester Cathedral just over the hill, then return to cosy bedrooms named after game birds with brick and flint walls, big firm beds, gun cupboards and dark leather furnishings, storm showers and natural toiletries; those on the ground floor are ideal for dog owners.
