The Experience

The hotel dates to 1742, but was re-modelled in 1925, giving interiors an Arts & Crafts country-house feel. You’ll find roaring fires and deep sofas, then a library bar and a courtyard garden where you can eat in summer. Smart bedrooms (some suites with sliding glass doors to the garden and newly-renovated rooms around the courtyard) come with period furniture, pretty fabrics, fresh flowers and robes in spotless bathrooms – good coffee machines and a decanter of sloe gin await.

Downstairs, ambrosial food in The Terrace Restaurant is locally-sourced (some homegrown in the gardens) and there are good veggie options. Try Monty’s Inn if you want something simpler but equally good – you’ll find an attractive bar and hand-pulled ales. Continental breakfast is included in the room price, The Full Monty is extra. Stroll 2 miles along the swan-filled river to Bucklers Hard, return to proper afternoon tea by the glowing fire.

Reviews

I have eaten in the restaurant and it is superb. Everything about this stunning hotel is perfect, from the delightful four poster rooms in the main hotel to the jaw-dropping 11 new courtyard rooms. The views are either overlooking the lovely gardens or the fascinating main street. A perfect example of a small country house hotel with a caring and enthusiastic manager and staff. Special indeed!

Location

The neighbourhood

Beaulieu, an ancient royal hunting ground, was gifted to Cistercian monks by King John in 1204. Their abbey took 40 years to build and you can visit its ruins in the nearby grounds of Palace House, seat of the Montagu family since 1538. As for the village, its tiny high street is a hotchpotch of 17th-century timber-framed houses; there's a good farm shop and a chocolate shop.

Local points of interest from General Manager Andrew Berridge

  • The beautiful fountain that forms the focal point of the gardens at The Montagu Arms was designed by sculptor, Giuseppe Lund OBE.
  • Has played host to discerning clientele including Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, British Actor Henry Irving; Writer, Sir H. Rider Haggard and former French president, General Charles de Gaulle.
  • During WW2 the Montagu Arms was used by the home-guard as a firing position in the event of invasion.
  • A scrapbook of top secret orders, letters and hand drawn maps by war-time Home Guard commander, Sir Morgan Crofton, revealed a rare insight into the real ‘Dad’s Army’ of the New Forest.
  • The Beaulieu River is one of the only privately owned rivers in the world.
  • The famous Beaulieu Motor Museum and Palace Gardens make for a lovely day out discovering the history of motoring. The museum is located close to the hotel.
