Another wormhole back to old England, a 400-year-old mill on Avon Water with mallards, lampreys and Indian runners to watch from the terrace in summer. The house stands in three acres of gardens that are filled with art and beautiful things. Inside, cosy interiors mix old and new delightfully: low ceilings, wonky walls, busts and mirrors, smouldering fires. Colour tumbles from pretty fabrics, there’s a panelled bar for pre-dinner drinks, then bedrooms which are full of character. The suite above the wheelhouse has a fabulous bathroom, you’ll find lots of colour, sheets and blankets, bowls of fruit. Three rooms have watery views (you can fall asleep to the sound of the river), most have fancy new bathrooms. The main suite has robes, all have White Company oils; and while a lane passes outside, you are more likely to be woken by birdsong. Downstairs, the beautifully refurbished restaurant continues to draw a happy crowd for its delicious local food, perhaps wild mushroom ravioli, Creedy Carver free-range duck, blackberry soufflé with apple crumble ice cream. The forest and coast are both on your doorstep.

In August we spent three nights at The Mill at Gordleton, which we loved. We did have one of the suites, which was well worth it with a view over the river and somewhere to sit. We ate in each of the three nights and the dinners were excellent.
