The
Experience

A good little local hidden down New Forest lanes, winningly unpretentious and owned by John Illsley of Dire Straits. Walkers, wax jackets and locals congregate in the small, rustic Foresters Bar with its chatty community vibe, and walls lined with the famous. The carpeted-cosy dining room, all cottagey furniture and roaring log fire, cocks a snook at gastropub remodelling, but the menus change twice daily – a rare treat – and make the best of seasonal produce. Try saddle of venison, whole baked seabass or locally caught Lymington crab. A paved terrace invites al fresco drinking, while bedrooms on the back add va-va-voom. Fresh, clean-lined and cosy, in fashionably neutral tones that bring the forest indoors, they sport roman blinds and Mulberry fabrics. Stylish bathrooms and paintings by John himself add warmth and class; fine breakfasts are the cherry on the cake. A great little find for anyone who loves the New Forest – neither new nor a forest, but fine open heathland nonetheless and excellent hiking terrain.
