A magical village setting in the pretty Meon valley for this handsome stone Manor house behind high walls. Tina gives guests the stable block with its own sitting/kitchen area. Here oak floors, ceiling timbers and whitewashed brick walls give a rustic feel, but two comfy cerise-striped sofas and a flat-screen TV are bang up to date. Sleep deeply in glorious beds with crisp cotton sheets, breakfast heartily at one table in the sunny conservatory: homemade jams, eggs from Tina’s happy hens, local bacon, smoked salmon. Outside is an acre of walled garden, and a woodland area which is carpeted with bulbs: the annual show begins with helebores, snowdrops and aconites, followed by daffodils. Deep herbaceous borders are packed with colourful cottage garden favourites like delphiniums, sedums, geraniums and salvias; the rambling rose ‘American Pillar’ scrambles through shrubs and trees. Discover smooth lawns, a beech hedge leading to a secret ‘room’, box parterres, a veggie patch, and – more formally – a pond and a fountain. Sit for a while on one of the many benches and listen to the abundant birds or find a new aspect of the garden to admire.
