Priors Mesne Coach House

Aylburton, Gloucestershire

After a day on the Gloucestershire Way or forest cycling, come home to long green views of the Severn and quiet evenings by the wood-burner

A great spot for a relaxed, country-loving couple to discover the green and pleasant land between the Severn Estuary and the Wye Valley. The Victorian coachman would be amazed; the same approach along winding lanes, down a tree-lined avenue to the same big green doorway and exterior stone steps, but inside now is a light, lofty, open-plan studio. The distant sight of two Severn bridges would surprise him too… Under old beams, on oak floors and between white-painted walls hung with bright paintings, the sitting/dining area has courtyard and river views, an antique dining table, a sofa and day bed by the red wood-burner and snazzy TV – and a tiny cupboard kitchen. Heavy velvet curtains can separate living and sleeping areas and the big bed is invitingly well-dressed (star-gazing Velux windows also have black-out blinds); the smart, carpeted bathroom is down a few steps. You’ve a pretty outside seating area and boules pitch, and Estate life bustles on around you. Friendly Mel and James live in the main house and are happy to advise; the Gloucestershire Way runs by; the Forest of Dean has miles of cycling trails.
