English country-house charm at this beautiful hamstone house with pretty garden and valley views, a half-hour drive from the Jurassic Coast

4 rooms

Rooms sleep 2 – 4

Leafy lanes and a private drive lead you to Martyn and Susie’s beautifully restored hamstone house, hidden in rolling West Dorset. Savour the total peace and stunning valley views in a home full of flowers, fine antiques and paintings. Cosy bedrooms have country-house charm; the suite is dog-friendly. Delicious breakfasts are served in the garden room: homemade muesli and jams, garden fruit compote, local eggs, bacon, sausages, smoked trout; French windows open to a productive potager and terraced gardens. Good walks, and the Jurassic coast is 30 minutes; return to sofas by the log fire. Fabulous hosts – nothing is too much trouble.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Martyn & Susie Lee

  • Wooden Cabbage is a perfect place to stay if you enjoy the peace and tranquility of the countryside, and on a clear night fantastic stargazing (no artificial light).
  • Stunning gardens to visit - Mapperton, Forde Abbey, Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens. Historic houses at Forde Abbey, Montacute, Barrington Court and Athelhampton or a little further afield is wonderful Kingston Lacey
  • Bridport has a wonderful market to browse on Saturdays including antiques and bric-a-brac. The series ‘Broadchurch’ was filmed at West Bay and Bridport - 12 miles. Sherborne is a delightful small town, with lovely Abbey and good shopping
  • Jurassic Coast for lovely walks; and lunch at the Hive Beach Cafe, Burton Bradstock, or Rachel’s at West Bay, Crab Shack Portland, - local crab, fish, scallops and other seafood all readily available.
  • Lyme Regis - 40 minutes drive, with a very pretty walk along the way which Martyn will tell you about, and the Hix Restaurant overlooking the harbour, for a good lunch or dinner.
  • Eggardon Hill is good for a walk with stunning views towards Portland and the coast - 15 minutes drive.
