The Experience

The elegant minimalist design of this house is a real winner – everything you need is where it should be, with such restraint and attention to detail, you’ll want to move here and never leave. The fact that it’s so eco-friendly, with great insulation and a heat exchange system is the icing on the cake.

Uplyme is in an AONB – as archetypally rural as a Famous Five illustration. A dappled woodland walk delivers you into the middle of Lyme Regis without the insanity of trying to park in this deservedly popular seaside town. For a quieter outing, the friendly Talbot Arms a mile down the road serves good pub grub.

If the weather doesn’t play ball, lounge around the wood-burner and play cards and games. Chat to everyone while you cook in the open-plan kitchen/dining area – an open hatch through to the sitting room helps conversation flow through. An easy house – you can even bring your well-behaved dog.

Reviews

The Wainhouse provided a great base for a lovely 5 day family break. The house is furnished to a very high standard while Diana was a great hostess during our stay - we really appreciated the welcome pack when we arrived. It's a pleasant signposted walk into Lyme Regis which is a lovely seaside town full of great places to eat & drink in while there are loads of great coastal walks along the Jurassic Coast. We loved our stay at The Wainhouse. Diana was a pleasure to deal with and supplied us with ample information prior and upon arrival, whilst also always being available to help. We found the fridge stocked with essentials as well as plenty of firewood by the wood burner. The cottage is beautifully done with ingenious touches here and there. There was plenty to choose from when it came to planning our days and exploring the area, but returning to the house was still an absolute highlight.

Such a cool hideaway! Stylish, beautiful and a clever use of space! Myself, my friend and her daughter just loved this space. Diana (the host) left us wine in the fridge, as well as butter, eggs, milk and bread, she was also very quick to reply any questions we had. Beds where very comfortable, and the log burner does heat the whole place well, so it’s a very cosy pad! Well equipped kitchen too! Very quiet location and a just 5-10 min drive into town. Loved it!

Location

The neighbourhood

Bustling Lyme Regis is two miles downhill – if the walk doesn’t appeal, it takes seven minutes by car. The town has something for everyone, from Hix Oyster & Fish House in gardens above the harbour, to sea-front fish and chips running the gauntlet of gulls. Fossil fanatics head to Charmouth Beach four miles away to seek out pyritised ammonites (or buy them at the gift shop). Broaden your gastronomic horizons at River Cottage HQ, two miles inland.

Local points of interest from Diana Hall

  • There's a World Heritage Site on your doorstep - the Jurassic Coast - so take your pick from fossil hunting in Charmouth at low tide, walking the Undercliff to Lyme Regis or exploring the impressive shingle structures and Fleet Lagoon at Chesil Beach.
  • Lyme Regis, 'The Pearl of Dorset', with its iconic Cobb, town beach and blue clay cliffs is hard to beat as a classic seaside town but Bridport & West Bay to the east and Beer, Branscombe & Budleigh Salterton to the west hold their own distinctive charms!

  • For arts and culture lovers; walk in the footsteps of Thomas Hardy, Jane Austen or John Fowles, take in some local artists during Dorset Arts Week, enjoy the lively programme at the Marine Theatre, or visit Martin Clunes' cat & dog show at Buckham Fair!
  • Enjoy plenty of walks from the house, it's in an AONB, or hike and picnic at Pilsdon Pen, Eggardon Hill or Golden Cap. For gentler rambles check out world class gardens such as Abbotsbury, Forde Abbey, Barrington Court, Tintinhull, and Hestercombe.
  • For the active there's sailing, kayaking and paddle boarding or charter a rib or go mackerel fishing in Lyme Bay. Swim at Eype Mouth or Burton Bradstock beaches, walk high ropes or off road cycle at Go Ape or take in a leisurely round of cliff top golf.

Introducing

Diana Hall

Warm and welcoming Diana lives and works in Bristol during the week, where her husband is a professor at the University. The Old Dairy House was their weekend bolthole – but now the children are grown up, they felt it was time for others to enjoy it. They built the Wainhouse on the footprint of another old farm building on the property. Diana is responsible for the beautiful gardens and the stylish interior design of both retreats, seeking out just the right furniture to complement the history and scale.
