The
Experience

The lawns of this 16th-century priory run down to the river Frome. Boats float past, an old church rises behind, a gorgeous garden filled with colour wraps around you. As for this lovely country house, you’ll find a grand piano in the drawing room, a first-floor sitting room with garden views, then a new restaurant with walls of glass that juts into the garden giving rather good views. There’s a beautiful terrace, too, where you can sit in the sun and watch the river pass. Bedrooms in the main house come in different sizes, some cosy in the eaves, others grandly adorned in reds and golds. You get Zoffany fabrics, padded window seats, bowls of fruit, the odd sofa. Eight have river views, others look onto the garden or church. Chic bathrooms – some dazzlingly contemporary – all come with white robes. Rooms in the boathouse, a 16th-century clay barn, are lavish, with oak panelling, stone walls and sublime views. Outside, climbing roses, a duck pond, banks of daffs and snowdrops in spring. Corfe Castle and Studland Bay are close. A slice of old England with delicious food to boot.
