The Nook

Shipton Gorge, Dorset

Scandi style in a roomy cottage minutes from the Jurassic coast – family fun with a rambling garden and a den for children

6 beds

3 bedrooms

Sleeps 6

Through oak and beech-lined lanes to the valley hamlet of Shipton Gorge and a scattering of stone cottages around a tiny crossroads. Yours is whitewashed and detached, with a pretty façade hiding a light, bright interior.

Families or groups can spread out between a sitting room with toasty wood-burner, big kitchen and a fabulously bright breakfast room, but the pièce de résistance for kids will be the ‘mini nook’, a wonderful children’s hideaway above the garage, hung with bunting and home to a teepee, games, and toys galore.

Outside, there’s a simple patio for lazy suppers, with the surprise of a sprawling multi-level cottage garden beyond – a spot for sundowners with charming rooftop views lies halfway up. Traipse two miles along footpaths to the beach, head to Bridport for the Saturday market, find.

Booking this cottage was extremely easy and Heidi is a wonderfully attentive owner. The cottage is lovely, bright and airy with numerous books, DVDs and toys for the kids, in fact everything they could possibly need. Their room was especially lovely with very comfy and safe bunk beds. The other bedrooms are gorgeous. Shipton Gorge is a beautiful and quiet spot but is also close to Bridport which has everything you could want from a theatre to Waitrose. The wonderful West Bay is very close with its famous restaurant, beach and Broad church connections. All in all, a perfect spot.

The Nook is the perfect place to unwind and come down in the calm of the quiet countryside. The cottage offers more space than you would first expect, is very nicely decorated and is (really!) fully equipped for a relaxed stay (be it in sunny or rainy days). We found everything for our week's stay, also for the kids (especially!), and the attractions are all in a short drive's distance away: spectacular beaches, nice towns, restaurants, shops, etc. And the owner, Heidi, was always very responsive if we had a question.

We spent four fantastic nights at The Nook and were truly sad to leave. The house is beautifully decorated throughout with special details throughout - the kids loved the Easter crackers and their own 'little Nook' playroom. All in all, a wonderful few days away - we will be back! Anna Lawson

The Nook is a lovely cottage with very comfortable beds, delightfully decorated and all you need for a happy stay. The owner, Heidi is very helpful and friendly and hope to have the opportunity to stay at The Nook again.

The neighbourhood

In arguably the most beautiful part of Dorset, Shipton Gorge lies in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty amidst a network of footpaths and bridleways. There’s gorgeous scenery and great food all around – try The Hive at Burton Bradstock, eight minutes’ drive, for seafood right on the beach, or the acclaimed Seaside Boarding House, which also has the most spectacular terrace. The coastal road from Weymouth to Bridport is one of England’s finest; go fossil hunting or explore Abbotsbury Tropical Gardens.

Local points of interest from James & Heidi Briscoe

  • The Nook is just a short drive away from the Jurassic Coast with great restaurants; The Hive is a renowned Seafood Restaurant right by the beach with great ice-cream in the summer. The Watchtower cafe in West Bay which is great for breakfast by the beach!
  • Symmondsbury Manor House and grounds are a short drive away with their lovely new interior shop. There also is a bike hire shop, a hair dresser and the wonderfully new chocolate bar all in the most beautiful setting. Also available for weddings.
  • Enjoy the lush garden and have coffee on our sun trap terrace with views across the village and over to the oldest church in the area, whilst the kids can explore our bug hotels and the hedgehog homes.
  • Over the past 25 years The Nook has also been the home to a hive of native honey bees! They nest above our garage. Our kids like to say they have "hundreds" of pets...! Our bees are protected and we are very proud to be contributing to their existence.
  • There are countless walks in and around the area. You can walk from the cottage straight to the beach at Burton Bradstock. Mind you, it's a fair walk so bring your walking boots!
  • For a sophisticated meal and great cocktails drive up the Cliff at Burton and visit the amazing Seaside Boarding house. Hotel, Restaurant and Cocktail bar, they also offer afternoon tea which can be indulged in whilst enjoying the most amazing sea view!

James & Heidi Briscoe

Heidi, who has a background in hotel management, James, and their two young daughters bought The Nook in 2015, when it was a little rundown and dated. The family have always loved Dorset and spent their first year of ownership renovating. They know how precious holidays are and love creating a warm atmosphere for you.
