Below, the river Stour winds through the valley and under the medieval, nine-arched bridge. Above, an Iron Age hill fort; between is Crawford House. Elegant and Georgian, it sits in attractive walled gardens full of roses; inside is pretty too, with an easy, relaxed atmosphere. Bedrooms with period furnishings are homely and warm; one room has four-poster twin beds. The sun streams through the tall windows of the downstairs rooms, and charming oil paintings hang in the dining room. Andrea is fun, and a great host, with lots of local knowledge; there’s a gate from the garden on to the North Dorset Trailway – useful for dog walking.
