The
Experience

Halfway down a hill sloping steeply down to the water, find this pretty stone cottage peering out from behind a sweet front garden. It’s a stylish haven just made for honeymooners or a pair of couples – owner Jackie’s twin passions are travel and interior design, and it shows.

Brilliant white walls form the backdrop for treasures from the East, posies of flowers scent the rooms and logs smoulder in the original inglenook. A theatrical black kitchen is yours so cook up a storm – tuck in around the distressed wooden table or outdoors in a tiny walled courtyard wreathed in honeysuckle.

Upstairs bedrooms glimpse out to sea, none better than the view from the double-ended bath in the generous bathroom. Saunter two minutes to excellent seafood at the Cove House Inn.

Reviews

Lovely place and very easy owners to do organise with. We didnt have great weather when we were there but the cosy house, sociable kitchen, bath with sea views and an enormous toasty fire place helped us feel comfortable with some time putting our feet up! There's a great little Indian called Balti Island as well as a nice pub called the Cove Inn at the bottom of the road. The start of the walk to Portland Bill is on the around the corner too.

We really loved the house. We stayed for a week with our two small children and it was a great base from which we could explore the area. Jackie, the owner was really helpful and even provided a crib for our baby which was amazing and she provided lots of info about local, child friendly attractions. The cottage itself was really comfortable - and the view from the bath is stunning.

My wife and I had a super relaxing two night stay here. The cottage is cosy and close to the waterfront and the start of the walking track that runs all the way down to the quarry sculpture park (1/2 hour) and the lighthouse, Portland Bill (1 1/2 hours. Both nights we picked up Indian takeaways from the end of the street and both mornings we headed around the corner to Jackson Gallery cafe. The owner was very friendly and made us feel at home.

Character cottage near the sea has been beautifully furnished. Light and airy rooms have a coastal charm and the huge fireplace in the sitting room keeps the place cozy when it's cooler at night. Long walks on the cliffs, coming back to a book in front of the fire, and falling asleep to the sound of the waves made for a perfect stay!

A beautiful little slice of heaven right in the heart of Portland on a street of very cute cottages. The attention to detail in every room is so well thought out. Stunning views with a bathroom to die for..A fireplace you want to sit next to every night and tiny treats like scrummy bed time chocolates which leave you thinking this is more than must a cottage to rent. Fabulous light, love and energy. I would recommend this to absolutely anyone who wants something very special with every home comfort you could think of and more..Thumbs up?? Absolutely! We cannot wait to go back.

We had a great stay at 62 Mallams. The cottage was really comfortable, very well equipped and was in a great location. We love soaking in the bath with a view of the sea and amazing sunsets. Jackie could not of been more helpful and went out of her way to recommend places to visit nearby.

Andrew, Surbiton

A very, very nice location to stay! We loved the interior design: very stylish and homely at the same time. We can recommend it absolutely! Jackie gave us a warm welcome with flowers and wine and was very flexible when we decided to remain another day!

If you're looking for a beautiful and stylish base from which to explore the stunning Jurassic Coastline, and a host who will go out of her way to make sure you have everything you need, then look no further, Jackie and her delightful cottage is it! We spent the most wonderful six days here with our four month old daughter and friends, cooking splendid meals in the wonderfully equipped kitchen, watching movies in front of the fire, and taking bracing walks along Chesil Beach and beyond. Thank you Jackie, it couldn't have been more perfect!

We've stayed at numerous Sawday properties and 'Al' never lets us down! My husband and I saw in the New Year at Jackie's cottage. The cottage was beautifully decorated, extremely comfortable and full of character making it very cosy when the wind was howling outside. Jackie has filled her home with many intriguing artefacts and a vast array of interesting reading material. She went out of her way to provide us with local restaurant information for my husband's birthday. She also dropped off an extra bag of logs for the fire. All in all a perfect start to 2016.

Suzanne, London

It was a lovely home in a stunninglocation beautifully funished with all our needs catered for. The welcome wine and chocolate were a nice touch. The offroad parking was a little tricky as the space was tight.

We have just stayed in 62 Mallams for a week and loved every minute. We felt right at home the minute we walked into the cosy cottage and loved the outdoor patio space too. Jackie has thought about every item you could possibly need and was more than helpful throughout the whole booking process and our stay. Fabulous beaches to explore going west towards Burton Bradstock and east to Lulworth Cove as well as a great cycle route into Weymouth to explore the bars and restaurants in the pretty harbour. Check out the Fishbox, Crab House, Billy Winters and watch the sunset from Cove House Inn!

Harriet

Had a fabulous time in this tastefully restored cottage over the course of a week. Reception room is very cosy and brilliant for a couple on those cold evenings (nothing like a roaring fire!) Kitchen is modern and practical and the owner has thought of everything. Great views from the bathroom and do take the time to soak your cares away in the mega bath! There's a great fish and chips at the end of the street and fantastic afternoon teas in the high street art gallery. Recommend the other villages around Portland and Corfe Castle. Looking for a romantic cottage? Book this!

We all so enjoyed staying in Jackie's beautiful home. The interior was so thoughtfully done - I adored all the light fittings and the elegant clock in the kitchen. I had the most wonderful sunset bath and the best sleeps- utter relaxation.

Location

The neighbourhood

62 Mallams huddles in a conservation area of Fortuneswell, one of three historic hamlets on Portland, with distant views of Devon. There are a few shops two minutes’ walk from the house and many excellent seafood restaurants nearby, as well as plenty to do – sailing, windsurfing, kite surfing and fishing trips. Jackie will happily organise art and sculpture workshops, and Chesil Bay and its visitor centre are a short walk. Across the bay, busy Weymouth has plenty of attractions, including sandy beaches and its ancient harbour.

Local points of interest from Jackie Clarke

  • Set in a conservation area, a Grade 11 listed cottage with wonderful sea views as far as the Devon Coast. A short stroll to the world famous Chesil Beach, Cove House Inn or take a breath taking walk along the Jurassic coast.
  • Visit the arts circle, galleries, Tout quarry, with spectacular stone sculptures from various artists, like Sir Anthony Gormley. Why not learn to stone carve? King Barrow quarry is a nature reserve home to the Silver Studded Blue, Portland’s own butterfly.
  • Full of historic streets and museums. Finish the day with a glass of wine and watch the sunset at the Cove House or in the bath! Deadman’s Bay (Chesil Cove), is named after the bodies brought ashore from shipwrecks. The Dead House is still in Pebble Lane.
  • Church Ope Cove has been home to smugglers and day trippers; today a peaceful haven with beach huts amongst the rocks. Lurking above lies the remains of the pirates graveyard at St Andrews Church. An area steeped in beauty and culture.
  • The Sailing Academy and Dive Centre provide a wide variety of activities – Scuba Diving, Snorkelling Sail and Kite Surfing with lessons and equipment hire available and lots of information and directions for those who want to discover the many shipwrecks.
  • Portland has recently been recognised as a community promoting feminist rights and men who in the past refused to marry pregnant lovers were stoned off the island whilst women could own and inherit property long before it was deemed legal on the mainland.

Jackie Clarke

Australian Jackie has lived in London for 20 years, and now enjoys splitting her time between running her successful Pimlico organic café and retreating to Portland – she lives next door. She’s been in hospitality her whole life, and will usually be around to welcome you. Her love of travel comes through in the globetrotting décor and thoughtful touches throughout the cottage.
