The Experience

Imagine a large, listed, 19th-century building with great arched windows attached to a courtyard of buildings and barns… the owners (generous, hospitable) meet, greet and live in one. Entering the Music Room takes your breath away. To the left, a piano, a chaise longue and a raised ‘stage’ with a draped four-poster bed. There’s original cornicing to the ceilings, white shutters to the windows, a fireplace with a wood-burner… in the middle, a dining and sitting area with a great sofa; at the far end, an open-plan kitchenette. Produce from the farm, fresh organic eggs, a Devon cream tea and a Gaggia coffee machine await your pleasure, a cleverly recessed dresser behind moulded doors houses crockery and cutlery, and every mod con is provided. It’s wonderfully secluded here, in 30 acres of organically run land, and magical: a walled secret garden with a walnut tree, a pond full of wildlife, mowed paths through long grasses, mixed orchards, a lawn for croquet and badminton, bees and birds – picnic wherever you like! There’s a pub with a history in Churchstow, and gorgeousness all around.

Reviews

Our stay at the Music Room was splendid. It is a very original property which is hidden away in the beautiful Devon countryside. Nick and Jo couldn’t have been more helpful - their recommendations for local pubs, restaurants, beaches and walks were on point. We would definitely recommend to anyone who wants a relaxing week/end away.

Rosie, London

The Music Room is a breathtaking building in a magical location. There are superb walks from the front door and gorgeous beaches within a short drive. The owners are kind and welcoming; there was even a cream tea, local apple juice and freshly laid eggs waiting for us on arrival. We can't wait to go back.

We, living in Amsterdam, are so glad to have spent one week Christmas holiday in the beautiful Music Room. We were welcomed by very nice, generous owners, who took care of everything, wine, mince pies, Christmas cookies and a real Christmas tree. The minute we walked in, we felt at home. For us it was an ideal combination of visiting small villages, beautiful pubs, walking in the countryside and cooking meals in a fully equipped kitchen. My daughter loved the beamer, so we spent many lazy evenings with Netflix movies near the fireplace, we loved every minute in the very special place.

Local points of interest from Jo & Nick Woodman

  • Chantry is nestled into the rolling South Hams Hills, just over a mile from the village of Aveton Gifford and within four miles of the coast.
  • Kingsbridge makes a great base for food gathering, with a farmers market, great fish shop, butchers and bakery and plenty of delis, cafes and restaurants. .
  • Footpaths lead straight from our fields, or use Chantry as a base for stretches of the coast path - try Wonwell beach to Prawle Point.
  • A birdwatchers haven, with egrets, kingfishers and dippers in the Avon estuary, Efford Marsh and Andrews Wood nature reserves close by, and barn owls quartering our meadows (if you are lucky!)
  • Walk along the Avon estuary to Bantham beach, for a swim or a surf and stop for food in The Sloop before heading home.
  • Explore wild coves and teeming rockpools, charge around Blackdown Rings hill fort, climb some of Dartmoor's Torrs - all within easy reach

Introducing

Jo & Nick Woodman

Jo and Nick are letting nature be paramount in their 10 hectares of meadows and 5 hectares of woodland. They've increased biodiversity, whilst raising sheep for wool and producing enough wood to sustainably heat the Barn, Gallery and their own home using a biomass boiler. By late 2022 they will have started to plant thousands of native trees on their land as part of a major project by The Woodland Trust in the Avon Valley.
