The Coach House

Kingsbridge, Devon

Family-friendly coach house set in eight acres of woods and gardens. A ten-minute stroll from the bustling waterfront at Kingsbridge

3 bedrooms

Sleeps 6

It’s a peaceful spot, but there’s plenty to keep the children happy, including a climbing frame, swings and a trampoline. Roam the wooded paths and enjoy the flower-filled grounds of the Lower Coombe Royal estate. Some of Devon’s best beaches (Bigbury, Bantham and Thurlstone) are quarter of an hour’s drive away for swimming and picnics, but all the shops and restaurants you need are just a stroll down the hill in Kingsbridge.

It’s set up for young families thanks to a fab bunkroom, complete with toys and books for all ages. Laid-back owners Paul and Julie have three children of their own and leave all you might need for the little ones, from a baby monitor to a highchair. They welcome you with a homemade cake.

From the living area, a stable door leads to a private terrace for an evening barbecue. The owners are nearby in the main house across the estate should you need anything, yet the place feels utterly secluded.

Living area with table for 6 and stairs leading to the rest of the house

Despite extremely poor weather conditions (rain for 4 days), our family of five had the most enjoyable stay at The Coach House. Thanks to the very precise instructions given by the owners, we had no trouble finding the house. Renovated to high standards, light, airy, the place is a haven of tranquillity in the midst of 8 acres of woodlands and stunning vegetation. Good comfortable bedding, well equipped kitchen. Great attention to details and a real sense of hospitality from the owner Julie who left us delicious home-baked cakes and a pint of milk. Kingsbridge is 10 minutes walk away.

A group of 5 of us had a fantastic stay in this lovely annex with beautiful surroundings. The house is gorgeous, lots of hot water for showers and immaculately clean. Julie was very accommodating when we got snowed in and made us a delicious cake on arrival. Would highly recommend!

Wonderful location, beautiful gardens and cozy winter base! The Coach House has everything you need and more. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and look forward to booking again soon.

We had a wonderful family break at this lovely cottage. The standard of the accomodation is extremely high, spotless and in tip top condition. Very tastefully furnished, with all of the appliances and audio visual equipment that you could wish for. A lovely feature is the very well stocked selection of family games that the host has provided. The situation is fantastic, set within your own private woodland and gardens, very peaceful and quiet. All within short walking distance of the hustle and bustle of the Kingsbridge High Street. Highly recommended

The Coach House is a lovely cottage, nestled in beautiful gardens. It was spotless, and provided a comfortable base from which to visit the many beautiful beaches and coastal walks. The local pubs have good food, and we particularly enjoyed our meal at the Oyster Shack. I will be recommending this excellent property to friends.

The neighbourhood

This 200-year-old Coach House is part of Lower Coombe Royal, a sizable estate nestled in a valley above the charming estuary town of Kingsbridge, where you’ll find plenty of independent shops, cafés and a cinema. This is a place steeped in maritime heritage and there’s no better way to explore it than by hiring a kayak or paddle board and taking to the water or hopping aboard a ferry for a scenic cruise down to Salcombe.

Local points of interest from Paul & Julie Williams

  • Lower Coombe Royal was built by Roger Bond Luscombe in the early 1900's after Combe Royal, the older mansion north of us, was badly damaged by fire. The Lower Coombe Royal estate is hidden away among acres of historic gardens on the edge of Kingsbridge.
  • The 200 year old Devon Coach House is nestled up the valley, hidden away in its own private glade. It is situated on the edge of the apple orchard and the historic American Garden. This cosy 3-bedroom stone cottage is the perfect family hideaway.
  • We offer you peace and tranquillity as well as adventure and surprises in our 8 acres of beautiful gardens and woods, all within ten minutes’ walk of the amenities of Kingsbridge and ten minutes' drive from beautiful sandy South Hams beaches.
  • There is a play area, table tennis table, trampoline and football pitch to keep the children entertained too. Or they can build dens, explore and run free around the amazing gardens and woods.
  • South Devon is famed for its walks. From coastal treks to wild moorland hikes, the surrounding countryside offers walks to suit every pace and level. The Coach House is also perfectly positioned to access many other great days out and activities too.
  • One of the best ways to explore the area is by boat, so whether you want to try your hand at kayaking or stand up paddle boarding down the estuary or just fancy a ride on the ferry we really recommend setting sail!

Paul & Julie Williams

Paul and Julie moved here with their three children in April 2017 as Julie, a Devon-native, yearned to come back to this beautiful corner of the world. Now they are both keen to share the area with their guests and are founts of knowledge about local sights and the South Hams region. They also know what it means to travel with three young children and have aimed to make everything as family-friendly as possible.
