The
Experience

Fields surround the garden behind; on balmy evenings, watch the sunset whilst you BBQ and stay out for some stargazing. Children will be happy here – slipping through the hedge to a playpark next door; there’s a football pitch and flat grass for cricket.

Pick up a picnic from the community farm shop in the next village and head up to Raddon Top for blow-away-the-cobwebs hikes and wide views over Dartmoor and Exmoor. Or spend the day discovering National Trust Knightshayes Court – a gothic country house with acres of gardens.

You’re next door to the owners’ house and with a bit of notice Diana is happy to cook for you – she’ll either deliver it or you can pile into her conservatory and have it there. She also leaves you homemade jams and gin plus a cake or scones; there’s space to chat if you like to cook.

Reviews

I loved meeting Diana and Paul and hearing all the fascinating stories behind the many artefacts around St Michael's Coach House - such as the rug from Afghanistan that has been in Paul's family for over 100 years! The peace is blissful and the views across the fields are stunning, a truly tranquil setting.

Location

The neighbourhood

Cycle or walk along the winding country lanes directly from the door or take a short drive down to the river for a stroll. Good pub food can be found less than 5 minutes away at The Ring of Bells at Cheriton Fitzpaine or The Cryws Arms; Michelin starred The Masons Arms is 15 minutes away. Stock up in Tiverton or Crediton – both 20 minutes in either direction- and then explore Tiverton Castle. Exeter is slightly further afield for restaurants, museums, art galleries and the 12th-century cathedral.

Local points of interest from Diana Bird

  • Our hamlet is so tranquil, just come and enjoy the utter peace and silence of the beautiful Devon countryside. Wildlife abounds, hedgehogs, roe deer, pheasants, foxes, sheep and badgers all often spotted in the garden alongside the numerous song birds.
  • We are so lucky to have the fabulous Ring of Bells pub just a couple of miles away that serves the most delicious meals. Booking is essential at weekends to avoid disappointment
  • Being right in the middle of Devon we are very fortunate to have the choice of either the North Coast or South Coast beaches on fine days and also the choice of renowned Dartmoor or Exmoor with their wild ponies for excellent walks with magnificent views
  • The Cathedral town of Exeter is only 25 minutes away . Rent bikes and cycle along the canal, or rent a kayak, either way stopping off at one of the many places for a bite. Or wander around the Cathedral square and visit the award winning museum.
  • We are between b the market towns of Tiverton and Crediton. Both are excellent for all grocery shopping needs and both have regular farmers markets. Slightly further afield is the small and unspoilt town of South Molton also with an excellent market.
  • St Michaels Church is next door and dates back to the sixteenth century, still with the original box pews . The Church tower houses one of Devon's sweetest peels of bells and as legend has it is home to all cuckoos in England!

Introducing

Diana Bird

Diana and Paul met in Kenya and now live in the old vicarage next door; with their two sons now grown up they split their time between the two countries. Diana has a passion for art and recently completed a degree in Art History; Paul is a vet who specialises in disease prevention in cattle. They both love travel and collecting treasures from far-flung places.
