This lovely spa hotel sits above the town with huge views across Lyme Bay towards Portland Bill. It’s a great spot with a terrace that has addictive qualities when the sun shines and a beautiful restaurant with walls of glass to weather proof the view. You’re 200 metres away from two sandy beaches, perfect for sunny days, but the hotel has lots to stop you wandering: a couple of swimming pools, five treatment rooms, a steam room and a sauna. Potter about and find a white marble bar, coastal art in the airy sitting room, then a stylish restaurant, where a vast Chesterfield sofa runs along six tables. Bedrooms are scattered about, some in the main house, others in the courtyard, but all have the same cool style: seaside colours, blond wood furniture, robes for excellent bathrooms, padded headboards and crisp white linen. Several in the main house have sea views, some have balconies, too. By day you take to the coastal path, spin down to the town, or bask on the beach. By night you return for a slap-up meal; start with crab chowder, follow with roast chicken and top it all off with chocolate tart and vanilla ice cream.
