Order a hearty packed lunch the night before, and set off on the Two Moors Way. This is a walkers’ hotel run by generous people in a glorious patch of Dartmoor. Tara and Nick give you cream teas, maps of walks straight from the door, high tea for children, and a boot room for you and your muddy things – including the dog.
Outside the river Teign runs alongside the gardens (yes, you can fish; there’s even an in-house fly fishing school if you want to learn how) and homemade scones with clotted cream and jam are served in the sunshine. Inside are three dapper lounges where fires crackle and burn on chilly days. Order your gin and tonic, play a game of Scrabble then step into the restaurant for fresh fish, locally reared meats and gorgeous West Country cheeses.
Bedrooms – some with garden views, others with French windows opening onto the lawns – are all a good size and have comfortable armchairs or sofas if you’d rather stay private.
