Little Barton

Bideford, Devon

Light, nature and tranquillity in AONB countryside by the Hartland Peninsula coastal path - for families, groups and green celebrations

16 beds

9 bedrooms

Sleeps 16

Swallows swoop over wild flowers and sheep pasture; clouds play chase above the surf-beaten Hartland Peninsula; on clear nights, wide skies are afire. The old farm, set in open countryside where walks traverse wild beaches and views stretch to Lundy Island, has two self-catering houses: a large, traditional 1902 farmhouse and smaller converted shippon. In the Farmhouse find big old armchairs, handmade beds, a piano by the fire, books to read, a splendid boxed-in loo (with a view). Cook with local ingredients, dine at a 16-seater table – it’s great for groups. The Cottage bears similar retro charm with original beams, wood-burner, a farmhouse kitchen with walk-in larder and doors opening straight into the garden. Lungfuls of Atlantic air whoosh into gardens facing south to the sea; there’s ping-pong in the barn. Friendly Alex welcomes guests with organic wine, maybe brownies. An inspiration for writers, artists, birdwatchers, beach-walkers, for green weddings, family parties and all who value peace and eco principles.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Alex Wilkinson

  • Wild high tide deep sea swimming at Hartland Quay (7mins by car or 45 mins walk).Excellent surfing/body boarding locally and further afield. Fishing trips available from Clovelly. Trips to Lundy on the Oldenburg ferry.
  • Fantastic walks over wild beaches and through wooded valleys. Lots of opportunities for extreme sports such as mountain boarding, cliff climbing, abseiling, high ropes etc. Riding 15 mins away. Cycle hire in Bideford for the Tarka Trail.
  • Houses run on ecological principals: wild flower meadow for bees and insects, small wood much loved by birds. Ecover products are supplied; bathrooms and kitchens are steam cleaned. There is a private water supply and an eco sewage system.
  • Clovelly walled garden only 10 minutes away. Lots of good veg for sale and very good local farm shops for well raised meat, venison, veg, eggs, cheese etc. Farmers' Market on the 1st Sun of the month in holiday seasons.
  • Hartland Abbey Garden and Docton Mill garden both within walking distance. Lots of art, pottery and handmade furniture in Hartland. On-site pottery.
  • You can buy pottery on-site, some of which is made from our own clay, on site.
