The
Experience

Bump along a rough track to a pretty house tucked behind a working farm. Julie will have left you homemade cake or a proper Devonshire cream tea and plenty of local tips. Pack up the car with everything for the beach – Salcombe is a 20-minute drive and you can join the South West Coastal Path there.

Drive to the tidal road on the river Avon and walk to Bantham Beach (or hire surfboards) stopping at The Oyster Shack for lunch. Return to all the mod cons you’d expect – a warming wood-burner, toys and games for all ages and a cracker of a kitchen with space for the whole family.

An enveloping garden is laid to lawn at the front, rambling to one side and with swings and seesaw at the rear, a sheltered patio and barbecue overlooking the lawn just the spot for lazy evenings at home. Families can pack light as Julie’s thought of everything, and dogs are most definitely welcome.

Reviews

Harraton is a fantastic place to have a holiday. The cottage is immaculately presented, and a lovely place to come home to each day after a great day out. Comfy, spacious and well equipped, its the perfect place to relax. Our kids love the garden area with the play equipment and tree-house. There is a nice spot to sit and eat outside if the weather is good and if its a bit more chilly, there's a cosy lounge with log burner to snuggle by. Easy access by car to fab beaches for water sports, lovely little coves and National Trust beaches and also some beautiful countryside on the doorstep.

Harraton Cottage is a holiday home with everything you need. It's great for a family of 4 right up to 2 families. There is plenty of space both upstairs and down, with all the equipment you need for a relaxing stay. It has a fully equipped kitchen, all the facilities you need for babies and toddlers ( high chair, cot, change mat, Bumbo, toys for all ages). It is also located by many amazing beaches, eateries, towns and shopping. There are also a couple of really nice National Trust places on the door steps. It has something for everyone. Book before it's too late, we LOVE it !

We have stayed at Harraton several times over the last 2 years - it is definitely one of our "happy places". The location is great, peaceful for a break away from the rat race but so accessible to Kingsbridge, Salcombe and the wonderful beaches of South Devon. The house is always immaculate and kitted out with everything you could possibly need - including very comfortable beds which really makes all the difference! The owners, though not on site, were lovely & offered lots of great advice on places to visit, eat, walk etc. We would not hesitate to recommend Harraton and will go back.

Hannah, Loddiswell

We thoroughly enjoyed our short break at Harraton Cottage. We were warmly greeted by Julie, her local knowledge was invaluable, as was the folder of local info provided. Inside, Harraton is stylish, comfortable and very well equipped with little touches to make you feel at home. It is spotlessly clean, beautifully decorated and peaceful. Outside, the garden is well maintained. Harraton is brilliantly located to explore all of South Hams, or a pleasant walk into Modbury where you can enjoy shops, cafes and pubs. We only wish we had booked in for longer, we didn't want to leave.

Kim, Kingsbridge

We’ve had the pleasure of staying in Harraton Cottage twice now. It provides an excellent base whatever time of year you choose to go. Great access to lots of local beaches and fantastic coastal walks. The house is perfect and has everything – always spotlessly clean and welcoming, with the underfloor heating a great addition during the colder months. We would completely recommend a family or group holiday at Harraton and look forward to going there again soon!

Location

The neighbourhood

Enviably well connected in the heart of south Devon, just 15 minutes’ drive from the A38 and ten minutes’ to Bantham’s great surfing beach. Discover Wonwell and Challaborough beaches too. Lovely Modbury’s independent shops, restaurants and cafés are a few minutes away. Check the tide timetable (in the cottage) for times, as many of the local restaurants are cut off at high tide – it makes them all the more special. The Journey’s End Pub (five minutes) is the nearest spot for food and refreshingly straightforward.

Local points of interest from Paul & Julie Williams

  • As a special welcome, all guests to Harraton Cottage are treated to a delicious homemade bake. Previous guests have enjoyed a Lemon Drizzle cake, a Devonshire Cream Tea, a Blackcurrant Bakewell traybake or a gooey Chocolate Brownie!
  • Harraton Cottage is perfectly positioned within easy reach of many beaches, the South West Coastal path and Dartmoor. Our enviable location means there are plenty of great activities and days out close by.
  • South Devon is famed for its walks. From coastal treks to wild moorland hikes, the surrounding countryside offers walks to suit every pace and level.
  • The famous Bantham Surfing Beach is only ten minutes drive away. Bantham Surf Academy offer surf lessons to all ages and abilities. It's easier than you think, so give it a go! You can then treat your self to a well deserved bite to eat from the Gastrobus.
  • One of the best ways to explore the area is by boat, so whether you want to try your hand at kayaking or stand up paddle boarding down the estuary or just fancy a ride on the ferry we really recommend setting sail!
  • Harraton Cottage is a lovely place to simply spend the day. There is a large paddock where the children can run free and play on the tyre swing, whilst you relax, read a book or just chat with friends.

Introducing

Paul & Julie Williams

Paul and Julie moved here with their three children in April 2017 as Julie, a Devon-native, yearned to come back to this beautiful corner of the world. Now they are both keen to share the area with their guests and are founts of knowledge about local sights and the South Hams region. They also know what it means to travel with three young children and have aimed to make everything as family-friendly as possible.
