Green Dragon House

Axminster, Devon
Bed & Breakfast

Upcycled style and great hospitality in a lively market town – top notch breakfasts, and River Cottage on the doorstep

3 rooms

Rooms sleep 2

Head down Castle Hill, dipping from Axminster’s market square to the river to this Victorian house. Find a fun, contemporary vibe inside: a wall clad in old pallets here, a row of finely painted bird boxes there; books and flowers abound, and the sleek walk-in shower rooms are a treat.

Hospitality here is a two-generation family affair. They make a friendly, talented team. Expect a cracking full English breakfast with French butter and locally sourced everything else. A small, pretty garden begs to be enjoyed, and you’re positively encouraged to bring home a bottle and quaff it al fresco.

Though peaceful today, this part of town is rich in industrial heritage – the last feather-dyers in the country continue to thrive next door! The prime place for otter-spotting on the Axe is a minute’s walk, the River Cottage Canteen footsteps in the other direction.

Superb warm welcome. Very comfortable bed in delightful room. Lovely bathroom with massive walk in shower. Glass of wine offered at 6pm! Delicious freshly cooked breakfast with fresh fruit etc. What more could anyone want from a B and B?!

Gary, Bristol

The Green Dragon is a lovely former pub dating back to the 1800’s. It has been sensitively refurbished, tastefully decorated with loads of character. Delightful bedroom, well equipped with a super comfortable bed, a great bathroom, huge shower and soft fluffy towels. Breakfast was fabulous, yummy local bread, with homemade preserves . Good options for vegetarians with fresh fruit cereal and yogurt, the avocado and poached egg was awesome. Jonathan and Diane were great hosts who couldn't have done more to make me feel comfortable and welcome. A great place to stay, highly recommended.

The neighbourhood

Alongside feather-dyers Jaffe et Fils Ltd, the Old Brushworks next door houses the studio of famous local potter Nick Hillyard, whose work can be found in countless galleries. Stroll across Stoney Bridge, a popular spot for fishing, and in minutes you’ll be in proper Devon countryside. The town’s shops and restaurants are a few minutes’ walk – the Axminster Inn is great for local beers, and don’t miss the atmospheric Thursday market. The Jurassic coast is 5 miles.

Local points of interest from Dianne Bruce

  • Green Dragon House offers the best of both worlds - Axminster's charming town centre and station (with direct trains to London in under 3 hours) are just a short stroll away, while the River Axe and beautiful open countryside are right on our doorstep
  • Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's original River Cottage Canteen is a 5 minute walk up Castle Hill, while their famous rural HQ is just a few miles out of town - a real food lover's haven offering a wonderful range of courses, feasts and other epicurean events
  • Set in beautiful East Devon, just over the Dorset border, Axminster is an ideal base for exploring the best that both counties have to offer - from bustling Exeter (just over 30 minutes away by train) to lovely Lyme Regis and the stunning Jurassic Coast
  • Axminster was recently voted best market town in England, and its Thursday market is certainly well worth a visit! Axminster has a rich history, from the founding of its minster in Saxon times, to the great carpet making heritage that made the town famous
  • Walkers, cyclists, nature lovers and even fossil hunters will find a wealth of things to do nearby, from the East Devon Way footpath to the Buzzard Way cycle track, the Axe estuary for bird watching and the Jurassic Coast for uncovering a T-Rex or two!

Dianne Bruce

The multi-talented Bruces - Dianne and Jonathan, with daughter and son-in-law Jo and Jackson - spent eight years running their bed and breakfast in France, and are now gradually renovating Green Dragon House. While the hubbies have the building and carpentry skills, Dianne has spent her whole life in hospitality and Jo is a fabulous cook with a knack for interior decoration. It’s a winning team, and between them they do their utmost to ensure a stay here is special.
