Braunton, Devon

Great for surfing, swimming, walking, cycling and for retro evenings in – cut up the pineapple, cube the cheese

Sleeps 4

Fans of the 70s – and sandy beaches – will love this 70s makeover of a family bungalow, not far from Braunton Burrows (a fascinating UNESCO site).

Behind its neat exterior, with glimpses of the dunes from the back garden, the clock has been turned back: wallpapers are boldly geometric, colours vintage; ornaments and paintings, crockery, and furniture all hark back.

It’s fun, it’s quirky, and it’s the perfect bolthole for you and surfing friends or family to submerge yourselves in 70s nostalgia. Watch Starsky & Hutch (on a big screen), listen to vinyl Abba, go the whole hog and dress-up while ‘Abigail’ rustles up a buffet in the kitchen.

Grab your board and head for Saunton Sands and there’s the Tarka Trail to be cycled too. Then home to hang your wetsuits and barbecue among the hydrangeas with a sunset backdrop.

It really doesn't matter if you like the 70s or not - either way this is a cosy and very comfortable little house with a good-sized garden with distant views to the dunes and the sea or to the hills dotted with sheep. Cooking was easy as the kitchen is as good as any home kitchen and Squires' fish and chips in Braunton was a welcome break; the bathroom is modern, the beds and pillows are comfortable and the sitting room relaxing. We joined family in Woolacombe for surfing then came happily back to relax in Dimmet. Braunton has better eateries than Woolacombe. It was a perfect long weekend

The neighbourhood

Dimmet is in Braunton, a thriving North Devon village with great places for foodies to dine out – it’s an easy 10-minute walk into the heart of the village where you’ll find an independent supermarket as well as local stores and markets. A 5-minute drive and you’re at the incredible Saunton Sands beach, and a little further for Croyde Bay, Woolacombe and then on to Ilfracombe. Barnstaple is 15 minutes and has bigger shops, ten pin bowling and lots of places to eat.

Local points of interest from Emma Warren

  • Braunton is a perfect base for exploring North Devon, with easy access to Saunton Sands, Croyde Beach, Puttsborough Sands and Woolacombe. Return from your day at the beach, shower and change and then it's just a ten minute walk into Braunton for supper.
  • With easy access to the Tarka Cycle Trail, Braunton Burrows and the Coast Path for walking and the nearby beaches for surfing - there's lots for you and the family to do. Or just chill out at Dimmet - with wide screen TV, boxsets & great wi-fi on hand
  • Winter or summer - Dimmet provides a great holiday destination. Beach and garden await in summer, then switch over to the winter cosiness of a walk on the beach followed by hot chocolate and a movie in front of the logburner - sheer bliss!
  • If you're a foodie, then Dimmet is a great place for you - we share our recommendations for places to eat - or we have a gas-hob, electric oven range cooker in the kitchen and you can create culinary delights to your heart's content!
  • Dimmet really is a 70s experience - cutlery , crockery, records and box-set DVD's are all there for you to enjoy - but the TV, cooker, coffee machine and beds are bang up to date to ensure that you have a luxury holiday.
  • We'd love you to help us create the 70s Dimmet experience - cook 70s recipes, use our dressing-up clothes, suggest additions - we love to hear them. It's a great place to bring the kids and grandkids - or if you're a vintage lover, Dimmet is perfect!

Emma Warren

Andrew and Emma live on a small farm in Somerset but have family in Braunton and know the area very well. Along with Dimmet they run an award-winning shepherd's hut glamping experience ‘Dimpsey’. They both grew up in the 70s and wanted to share their love of the era with guests – they’re always on the lookout for retro additions to Dimmet’s nostalgic interior.
