The
Experience

Perfect for family celebrations or big groups, this versatile, fun barn sits by a lake deep in beautiful South Hams farmland. Inside a long dining table for 12 spans the vast vaulted, open-plan living space; oak beams soar above. The interiors are impressive: a mix of antique and modern furniture, a sleek granite kitchen, big relaxing sofas, oak floors, a state-of-the-art wood-burner and a silent eco-friendly heat recovery system. There are four smart bedrooms downstairs, with sumptuous pillows and bed linen on huge Louis XVI and Victorian ironwork beds, all have lake views and dark slate en suite bath/wet rooms. The Crows Nest, a romantic mezzanine up spiral stairs, is the fifth. You’re tucked down a private drive (plenty of parking) with a fantastic outside space: barbecue terrace, games room and an enclosed baby and toddler play area. Owner Caroline (in the farmhouse) has created a stylish yet practical place for get-togethers. Dartmoor and the coast of the South Devon peninsula are minutes away.

Reviews

We visited Big Barn over the Easter break to celebrate my mum in laws 90th birthday with a family party, ages ranging from 1yr old to 90yrs old. A very comfortable, warm and beautifully maintained barn set in the Devon countryside which accommodated all ages with a games room and playing field with swings etc. The owner was more than helpful, received our online shop, unpacked and put all the groceries away. We asked if we could drop off frozen foods before our arrival time and this request was accepted with no hesitation. The family agreed that we would certainly stay at Big Barn again.

We were a group of 10 friends and had a fantastic weekend at Big Barn. The Barn is stylish and quirky with luxurious sofas and linens. However it also very practical and suits a big group wonderfully. Caroline, the owner, was very easy to contact before our arrival and was so helpful- receiving our grocery and wine deliveries before our arrival - and putting them away for us. The area is beautiful and we feel we've just scratched the surface. Would definitely recommend Big Barn and we'd love to come back.

Local points of interest from Caroline Murray

  • Big Barn nestles in the heart of the South Hams in Devon, an area recognised as ‘An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ (AONB). Surrounded by stunning countryside and just a stone’s throw from the coast, there is plenty to see and do for all ages.
  • There are 4 local market towns within a short drive from Big Barn; Totnes, Dartmouth, Kingsbridge and Salcombe. All of which are great for a day out and for picking up holiday essentials.
  • With the beautiful South Devon coastline on your doorstep there is plenty to see and do. The area offers a wealth, of safe, clean beaches perfect for swimming, surfing, wind surfing, water skiing, sailing, canoeing and fishing.
  • There are some sensational coastal walks in the area, our favourite is the walk along the South West Coast path from East Prawle to Salcombe. It is testing, but very rewarding. The walk is approximately 6 miles long and takes about three hours to complete.
  • You will be spoilt for choice when it comes to fabulous places to eat and drink in the area. Including a host of excellent local pubs, waterside cafes, bars and restaurants.
  • There are plenty of other leisure activities in the local are including; Dartmoor National Park, National Trust Houses, Paignton Zoo, Woodlands Adventure Park, Pennywell Farm, Dart Marina Spa and Dartmouth Golf and Country club.
