The
Experience

A grand house and restoration project, complete with turrets and gothic features. Geri and Kevin are art collectors and travellers – find striking pieces in every stylish corner. Bedrooms have lovely linen, antiques, flowers, chocolates… Breakfast includes honey and eggs from the village – eat in the kitchen, dining room or out on the terrace. The gardens are a perfect mix of nature and design; a bridge takes you over the Exe river (wild swimming!), and on to the Exe Valley Way. Exeter is a ten-minute drive. Settle on a velvet sofa by the log-burner – or up in the Ibiza-style snug at the top of the cupola and soak up 360 views.

How it should be done , We stayed in the East Village room, window seats overlooked glorious 360 views of the formal gardens set against a backdrop of the River Exe. Attention to detail was throughout , the linen , a really comfy bed, rain shower room with Cow Shed creams and gels , fluffy towels , made for a reviving experience, digital sound system, books on the region and so on, even down to the Green & Blacks waiting to be devoured. Breakfast was a wide selection of cereals, fruits , eggs cooked expertly with a choice of meat or vegetarian options. Geri you have done a great job

A stunning, spanking refit of a village house - right on the River Exe, with swimming nearby. Huge pieces of fantastic modern art, beds to die for, tonnes of space and immaculate gardens. Geri and Kevin have done their very own 'Grand Designs' project - practically taking each stone done before putting it back together, with huge sensitivity and no expense spared.

Ravishing, relaxing, rejuvenating. Enjoyed every minute in this exquisite. stunning house. Breathtaking views, luxury, comfort, style, delicious breakfast, brilliant location for walking and eating well in Devon. Super welcome and Geri and Kevin's care and attention to detail made this a very special weekend.

Having previously visited Brampford Speke we came across Barnhill House when visiting our daughter in Exeter. A great sanctuary with beautiful surroundings and lovely walks. The house has been renovated to a high standard, we stayed in the Asia room which had everything we needed and a comfortable bed. Geri & Kevin were perfect hosts, we have already booked our return!

We had a lovely weekend at Barnhill House. Beautiful situation above the river Exe, welcoming hosts, comfortable and spotlessly clean bed and bathroom and great breakfasts.

Amazing location. Feeling of spaciousness inside Gothic styled house beautifully restored. Warm reception. Expensive.

Barnhill is a magical place on the River Exe. Such a beautiful place to stay, words do not do it justice. Music and art surround you. Geri and Kevin are wonderful hosts. Just a perfect place to add to your holiday travels.

We stayed at Barnhill House on our way back from Holsworthy to Berkshire, as a convenient break in our journey. We were intrigued to read about the restoration that Geri and Kevin had undertaken, and we were not disappointed at all with what we found. We stayed in the Asian Room, being the mid priced of the three rooms available. The bed was very comfortable, and the facilities in the room were fine. We enjoyed a very nice breakfast, before a fairly early start the next day. Geri and Kevin were very welcoming, and the house is beautiful, as are the views of the River Exe and the countryside.

A delightful, unique and interesting home, where we felt warmly welcomed by Geri, Kevin and their two dogs! The perfect base for celebrating a double family birthday (2 adults and 3 grown up daughters, 23, 20 and 17). Gorgeous views, lovely countryside walk; better than a 'home away from home' for our celebratory 'aperitif' and opening of presents by the fireplace, and just a short walk for dinner at the great Lazy Toad pub... Not forgetting Geri's amazing breakfast. Highly recommended.

Local points of interest from Geri Carden

  • Let your imagination spring to life in this centuries old Devonshire Conservation Village with its beautiful walks and Grade II Listed pub.
  • Wake in the morning to the sound of birdsong and views of the River Exe and rolling Devon countryside. Marvel at the fish jumping and the salmon searching for their spawning grounds.
  • Have a go at Wild Swimming from our riverbank or wander down to one of the two river beaches just a stones throw away.
  • The end of the driveway brings cycle routes, rambling, hiking, friendly locals. The garden brings mystery and excitement pondering the fabled World War II lovers messages of the sandstone cave.
  • 30 minutes from all that Dartmoor and Exmoor have to offer - horseriding, rockclimbing, canoeing, tree surfing, orienteering, wild swimming, discovering ancient sites and climbing Tors!
  • Sit quietly for a while on the riverbank and watch for the Kingfisher or the otter - both a bit shy and there are lots of other more friendly birds to be seen.
