Vallon Cottage

Bakewell, Derbyshire

There's heaps to do in this corner of the Peak District - walking, cycling, historic houses - then back to sundowners at this homely haven

2 bedrooms

Sleeps 4

In the Peak District National Park, a charming village peppered with old stone cottages, and yours is no exception. Vallon Cottage is tucked off the (quiet) main road. Ali lived here so there’s a homely feel: book-filled shelves, nice furniture and rugs, plants, art on the walls. The galley kitchen will be a joy to cook in; you eat at the round dining table in the conservatory with French doors leading to the terrace. The garden is country-cottage pretty, with stupendous views from the decking area. Back inside there’s a handy utility room, a comfy sitting room with wood-burner, sofas with heaps of cushions, a grandfather clock and TV. Upstairs to two peaceful double bedrooms (one en suite, one with separate shower room). There’s a chill out room (no TV, just books and a sofa), and if you have extra guests you can spill into Ali’s adjoining cottage when she’s not staying there. Walkers will rejoice: there are myriad walks radiating from the door. Youlgrave has three pubs, and there’s a deli and general store; for more provisions Bakewell is 10 minutes in the car.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Ali Plowright

  • The dawn chorus may wake you in the mornings as the garden is a haven for wild birds; blackcaps, wrens, woodpeckers, long tailed tits, nuthatch and at dusk the owls announce evening time.
  • Chatsworth house, restaurant, gardens, farm shop and playground is a 15 minute car ride. There are many events happening; Easter egg hunts, horse trials, Christmas markets, concerts and an impressive sculpture exhibition in the garden every year in October
  • Haddon hall is 10 minutes away, or a walk over the fields. It is probably the finest example of a fortified medieval manor house in existence. Present-day Haddon Hall dates from the 12th Century to the early 17th Century. Now restored with lovely gardens.
  • Nearby in the Dark Peak, the Hope Valley gives a wealth of interesting places to explore. There is Eyam, the plague village , full of history, and Eyam Hall. Little john's grave in Hathersage. And the caverns in Castleton where Blue John was mined.
  • Local towns are Bakewell, Ashbourne, Matlock and Matlock Bath. John Smedley knitwear has afactory shop in Lea, great for quality bargains. David Mellor kitchen shop, cafe, museum and factory is in Hathersage, they do factory tours too.
  • Many beautiful walks of varying ability start from Vallon doorstep, there are guide books on the shelf to help you plan your day. There are trails and old railway tracks to cycle, paragliding, golf and water sports close by. Alton Towers 45 minutes by car.
