The
Experience

Between two small dales, close to great houses (Chatsworth, Hardwick Hall, Haddon Hall), lies this peaceful cluster of three ancient farms and a church; welcome to the 16th century! Simon and Gilly, warm, delightful and fascinated by the history, have restored the east wing to create big, beamy rooms in the old hayloft and a pretty garden room on the ground floor. Wake to a choice of scrumptious breakfasts with local and organic produce – served in the cavernous Elizabethan kitchen. There’s a lovely garden with sweeping views across Derwent Valley and distant hills, walks from the doorstep and the Peak District to explore.

Reviews

Perfect in every way - setting, welcome, comfort, breakfast...everything. Will be going again

Christopher, London

Stayed for to nights, Gilly was a most attentive host and both the location and accommodation were idyllic. Will definitely be going back.

Jacqueline, Preston

Stayed 3 times this year. Have used many b&b's over the years and this has got to be the best for us. Interesting location and Hosts

Jack

One night stay at the b&b. Hosts are the perfect mix of open and helpful with respect for their guests privacy... Beautiful interior, lovely gardens, and excellent breakfasts. Will visit again for sure! Thank you Gill! And I hope you get rid of the cold. R&A

Local points of interest from Simon & Gilly Groom

  • The Manor Farmhouse is built upon the remains of Dethick Manor. Parts of it, including the kitchen where guests have breakfast, date back to 1403. Here the focal point is our huge fireplace - the best seat in the house! It's definitely a place to linger.
  • Masses of history here. Dethick was once the home of Anthony Babington who plotted to assassinate Elizabeth I and rescue Mary Queen of Scots to put her on the English throne. Both he and Mary were executed. And visit the tiny medieval church next door.
  • This is a great base from which to explore the area. We are awash with stately homes. Chatsworth, Haddon Hall, Hardwick Hall and Kedleston Hall are just a short drive. And grab a bargain at John Smedley Knitwear - the Mill Shop is just two minutes' away.
  • This is prime walking &cycling country. Some of our stunning scenery is better visited on foot - or bike. So bring boots and maps. Massive hills and beautiful tree clad valleys with fast flowing rivers are awesome. Local Bike Hire 10 minutes from here
  • Derbyshire is a foodie place - tremendous local food producers making amazing goodies for picnics and gifts. Excellent restaurants/pubs within a few minutes walk/ drive. Bakewell has the largest Farmers Market in the Midlands - last Saturday in the month
  • For a real treat - stargaze..!! Its so dark here our massive starry sky truly sparkles. Or laze in our garden and take in the stunning views. Dethick is a perfect place to unwind with easy access to Derbyshires fantastic scenery, heritage, arts and culture
