The
Experience

In the stunning Cordwell Valley find three barn conversions surrounding a lovely old farmhouse. ‘Orchard’, a sweet little bolthole for two, has a Rayburn and a romantic mezzanine bedroom lit by a chandelier; ‘Gin’ is slightly bigger, with a mural and a neat, modern kitchen. The apartment, adjacent to the hall, is light and airy, with a bird’s-eye-view of the pretty courtyard below. Stock up your wood-burner with logs and settle into the rural tranquility… Hearty, home-cooked meals can be delivered to your door by Melanie. Outside find 3 south-facing acres of gorgeous gardens with different ‘rooms’: an orchard with ancient apple trees, a Victorian greenhouse with grape vine and fig tree, a fecund kitchen garden (you can buy produce), a cobbled terrace overlooking the formal garden with its year-round interest, Alpine slopes, a pond surrounded by Gunnera and an Oriental garden tucked out of the way. Plenty of seating throughout and pagodas for shelter encourage guests to linger, there are rare trees to spot, wildlife and walks along the side of the valley straight from the garden. Art work is being added, it’s picture perfect for weddings – Melanie says “It gives joy to the wanderer and peace to the trouble-minded”. Lovely.

Location

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Melanie Moore

  • The property is set within 17 acres of rolling Derbyshire hillside; 5 acres of spectacular gardens which guests can enjoy. Rest in a Pagoda, bounce on the trampoline, play hide and seek with kids in the treehouse or enjoy the evensong with a glass of wine.
  • There is something for everyone here – cyclists, artists, photographers, walkers, nature-lovers, lovers, canoeists, fishers, shoppers, historians, theatre goers, climbers, gliders, sailors, country pursuits, foodies, crafters, cavers, horse riders.
  • Walks can be taken directly from the site and into the countryside. A plethora of fantastic walks are a 5 mins drive away; Curbar Edge, Calver Edge, Stanage Edge, Longshaw Estate, Hathersage, Castleton, Ladybower and Derwent Reservoir to name but a few.
  • Walk up the hill to 3 great pubs; The Angel (fantastic food), George and Dragon (great hostess and drinking), Thai at the Travellers (authentic Thai food, also takeaway). Just 2 mins drive away; The Tickled Trout; pizza oven, fresh fish, amazing desserts.
  • Chatsworth Estate, just 10 mins drive away with it’s events, gardens, play areas, House, amazing history (Mitford Sisters, Kennedy Family), eateries and superb Farm Shop. Haddon Hall, Eyam, Hardwick Hall just 20 mins away, fishing lakes 5 mins away.
  • Literary giants walked this countryside - W.B.Yeats, HG Wells, George Barnard Shaw, John Galsworthy, E.M.Forster, Olive Shreiner (novelist) and many others to the area, courtesy of Edward Carpenter who lived less than a minute away from Horsleygate Hall.
