The
Experience

Wind up the steep drive and be rewarded by the vista of this Georgian manor and a 360-degree panorama. A fascinating house owned by the Hurt family since 1480, it’s been a film set many times. Your elegant top floor suite has a huge convivial sitting/dining room with a log fire; comfortable bedrooms with beautiful linen; games, books, art, antiques and family pieces. Breakfast is in the majestic hall: Caroline’s feast of home-laid eggs with local bacon, black pudding, artisan bread; delicious dinners too. Charles (author of mapped walks) has all the local tips: footpaths from the door, market towns, Carsington Water, period homes.

Local points of interest from Charles & Caroline Hurt

  • Fantastic walking, right from the front door, from a half-hour stroll to all-day hikes. Charles Hurt, author of 'On Foot in the Peak District', is usually on hand to advise.
  • Ashbourne is a beautiful market town with many independent shops and good pubs and restaurants. Two terrific 'gastro' pubs, the George at Alstonefield and the Duncombe Arms at Ellastone, are within easy reach.
  • Derbyshire is home to many great stately homes, including Chatsworth, Haddon, Calke Abbey, Kedleston, Bolsover Castle, Hardwick, Tissington, Sudbury and Renishaw.
  • Sailing, clay-shooting, biking, climbing and, of course, walking and many more activities can be arranged nearby.
  • Casterne is one of those increasingly rare places where there is no traffic noise apart from the occasional tractor.
  • Five films have been made at Casterne: 'Jane Eyre', 'The Hound of the Baskervilles', "Hercule Poirot', 'Far from the Madding Crowd' and 'Jonathan Creek'.
