Wood House sits quietly in a sea of green… Reached over stunning mountain passes where sheep cling to the roadsides, it’s surrounded by trees – with Crummock Water at the end of the valley. Tony is affable and gives you an elegant drawing room with open fire, art, piano, antiques; a dining room with polished oak floor and china-laden table; comfortably furnished bedrooms with wonderful lake views. Breakfast is a Cumbrian spread with famous sausages, granola, homemade bread; there’s dinner too if you want. Wordsworth House nearby, a private woodland path to the lake and Tony can sort canoeing, guided walks, mountain biking and more.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Tony McKenzie

  • Wood House has its own private access to Crummock Water lake, with a beautiful pebble beach two minutes walk from your door.
  • There is a wealth of activities on the doorstep including canoeing and rowing on the lake, spectacular walks, the thrilling Via Ferrata at Honister, world class mountain biking at Whinlatter, scrambling, canyoning and rock climbing.
  • We offer professional adventure guiding for all activities.
  • Alfred Wainwright detailed walks to 214 fells in the Lake District and many make a pilgrimage to Buttermere to make an ascent of his favourite, Haystacks, and to visit the delightful Innominate Tarn where he chose to have his ashes scattered.
  • Magnificently situated in the beautiful Buttermere valley, Wood House is a fine Lakeland home set within its own grounds that overlook breathtaking scenery. A photographer's playground.
