The Royal Oak at Keswick

Step off a pedestrianised high street, into a cosily traditional haunt. This much-loved inn beside Keswick’s old Moot Hall, with its old dark quarry tiles, long narrow bar, swish wallpapers and comfy seating attracts a diverse crowd: walkers, holiday makers, locals. Now it’s pulling in diners too, with accessible menus and local suppliers. Delicious breakfasts, hearty meals for walkers (try the wild mushroom stroganoff) as well as refreshing cocktails, craft beers and good wine.

Arrive early and pick a seat by a fire, find treats for your dog, trays for muddy boots, Herdwick sheep teapot covers in your bedroom and handmade oak hanging rails. All bedrooms (not huge but bright, colourful and airy) are dog friendly and there is one family room.

Browse the lively market in town, walk the fells, jump into lakes, return to a hearty supper, perhaps a nightcap in the bar and then retreat upstairs for a good night’s sleep.
