The Experience

This gorgeous inn is hard to beat. You’re in the hills above Windermere in a pretty village encircled by lanes that defeat most tourists. It’s deeply rural with ten-mile views down the valley and a church next door; there’s a bench to drink in the view, bell ringers practise on Friday mornings, the occasional bride glides out in summer. As for the Punch Bowl, it was rescued from neglect, renovated beautifully, and now sparkles, a mix of old and new.

Outside, honeysuckle and roses ramble on stone walls. Inside, rustic elegance runs throughout: Farrow & Ball colours, rugs on wood floors, sofas in front of the wood-burner. Innovative menus in modern British/French style have won many awards and the wine list is plentiful. Bedrooms sport beautiful linen, pretty fabrics and Roberts radios. Excellent bathrooms have double-ended baths, separate showers and white robes.

Wake to hearty breakfasts before you set off on bracing walks.

Reviews

Richard Rose's handsomely renovated, rambling stone building sits back from the road between Kendal and nowhere, overlooking the stunningly lush Lyth Valley, alongside pretty St Mary's church. Rooms are beautifully refurbished, the Noble Suite has twin roll-top baths with serene valley views, the kitchen delivers well executed modern British dishes.

Our second stay, and this time around we received everything we had hoped for in our first UK Christmas. The level of service and comfort was perfect and overall the Christmas spirit and a sense of being truly welcomed was everywhere. Very high quality food across the whole three days topped everything off - great value for money.

Really nice rooms, excellent food, friendly and efficient staff, not overpriced, lovely location.

Location

The neighbourhood

This is the sleepy Lyth valley which links Kendal to Windermere with glorious views across fields towards the low fells. Kendal is 5.3 miles for enough outdoor clothing shops to sink a battleship, a wonderful farm shop with over 60 cheeses, smoked meats and game from the local estates, a fabulous artisan bakery and a station. Head to Windermere for the obligatory lake boat tour or wild swim.

Local points of interest from Alexander Rose

  • Originally dating back to 1829 when it was used as a blacksmith's shop, the Punch Bowl has been extensively refurbished and today offers a unique, relaxing blend of old charm and modern comforts.
  • Set in the peaceful village of Crosthwaite, The Punch Bowl has plenty of picturesque walks on its doorstep and stunning views around the Lyth Valley. We're also just a 15-minute drive away from Lake Windemere.
  • Must-do walks include Gummer’s Howe and Scout’s Scar for amazing views, High Dam for its wild swimming tarn and The Fairfield Horseshoe, probably the best Wainwright.
  • For even sportier types, there’s Fellfoot Watersports, Grizedale Forest Mountain Biking and Windermere Golf Club.
  • For those with a more relaxed attitude, there’s Blackwell Arts & Crafts House, Windermere Jetty Museum and Sizergh Castle & Gardens.
  • For stunning journeys try Haverthwaite steam train combined with a lake cruise, or the A591 drive to Keswick which was voted England’s most scenic road.

Introducing

Alexander Rose

It's a family affair and has been for over 20 years. Owner Richard is aided by son Alex as manager and sister Judith who runs reception and much else. Richard also owns a farm in the village producing damsons, rhubarb, Cumbrian lamb and much more, so good food is very much part of the deal at the inn.
