The Cottage in the Wood

Keswick, Cumbria

High on the hill with big views of Lakeland peaks, a lovely small hotel with stylish rooms and stunning local food

9 rooms

Rooms sleep 2

This lovely restaurant with rooms is a great base for the northern Lakes. You’re on the side of Whinlatter Pass with views that shoot off to a chain of Lakeland peaks – pre-dinner drinks on the terrace is hard to beat. Inside, chic interiors are just the ticket: the sitting room has a fire that burns on both sides, there are books and games to keep you amused, then windows galore in the restaurant. Rooms – some bigger, others smaller – have excellent beds, crisp linen and sparkling bathrooms. One in the eaves has a claw-foot bath, four have mountain views, the garden room has its own terrace. There’s lots to do – lakes to visit, hills to climb, cycle trails to follow. Whatever you do, come back to Liam’s fantastic food. His six-course tasting menu is a big draw; highlights include seaweed broth, langoustine with grapefruit, sweetbreads with wild garlic, Fennel with olive oil jam. There’s a drying room for walkers, secure storage for bikes, a burn that tumbles down the hill. Night skies amaze, red squirrels and woodpeckers visit the gardens. Two-night, midweek breaks are a steal and include dinner.

Don't be deceived by the cover photo - this is indeed surrounded by forest but the view from the dining room and terrace to Skiddaw is absolutely spectacular and worth the visit alone. The rooms are spotless, fresh and beautifully furnished. As to the food - just trust the highly positive comments and reviews elsewhere: all beautifully prepared with great thought, excellent ingredients and attention to detail. Wonderful. Last but not least, you can be sure of a genuinely friendly welcome and excellent service from all the staff. We'll be back.

What a beautiful hotel. From the first welcome, the most fabulous food and the surroundings. We enjoyed every minute. Small rooms, but clean and you could sit near the fire just reading a book and we were so taken care of.
