The
Experience

Meander through glorious mountains, becks and tarns to a conservation village and an artistic barn conversion. Set in a courtyard, attached to the architect owner’s house, your section of this former threshing barn has been brilliantly transformed. Enter the sleek kitchen and a curved red wall guides you to the principle feature: a spiral staircase of polished oak railway sleepers and stainless steel. Up to the first floor, past the bathroom with its freestanding bath, to the living room and a window seat for mountain and lake views. A hand-blown glass chandelier cascades from the raftered ceiling, fresh lilies pose in a vase and a cylindrical wood-burner flickers by a glass table balanced on a sculpted oak root. The galleried bedroom is above, under a vaulted green oak roof. Step out to the courtyard for breakfast or scale the terraced garden to soak up the afternoon’s rays. Nuggets of history remain – exposed stones, old oak lintels polished to a rich hue – but the finishes ooze style, from the Starck fittings to the home cinema. If you like the art on the walls, chances are it is local – the owners are happy to introduce.
