Reviews

We had a most comfortable two nights in the delightful village of Troutbeck. Monica and Brian made us most welcome and provided everything possible to make our stay enjoyable. I can also recommend dinner at the Mortal Man, best to book.

Local points of interest from Monica & Brian Liddell

  • Explore Troutbeck Village's sixteenth and seventeenth century vernacular architecture. You can wander for hours admiring its unique bank-barns, crow-stepped slate roofs, massive circular chimneys, oak mullioned windows, and slate porches.
  • Visit the National Trust's Townend, a 5 minute walk from Fellside Studios. Modest in size, but full of intricate original oak carved furniture, Townend gives an atmospheric insight into the Browne family who lived here for almost four centuries.
  • Visit Jesus Church, just a 3 minute walk from Fellside Studios, with its famous east window designed by Edward Burne Jones, Ford Maddox Brown, and William Morris. The churchyard lies in a perfect valley setting, overlooked by ancient yew trees.
  • Walk on miles of country lanes, footpaths and bridleways leading directly from your Studios' front door. You can stroll gently for an hour along lake shores and farm lanes, or climb all day on craggy mountain tops and high fells.
  • In each Studio, and downloadable from our website, there’s a simplified map and instructions for a few easy, accessible walks, that would make an ideal introduction for first-time visitors (but which we never tire of revisiting again and again).
  • Visit Holehird Gardens, a secluded delight with breathtaking views across Windermere, half an hour's walk from Fellside. There's a classic walled garden, Victorian alpine glasshouses, a pond, a cascade, a tarn, and countless varieties of shrubs.
