The
Experience

One mile from the ancient market town of Cartmel – home to the racecourse and a few Michelin stars – and on a quiet no-through lane used mostly by walkers and horses, sits a lovely 500-year-old Cumbrian longhouse and two cottages attached, which Sarah (a horticulturist) and Stewart have carefully renovated. Then they started on the garden, now ready for them to show you round: an ancient walled vegetable garden with bee boles, orchards (for crumbles, of course), topiary and herbaceous borders, a new water garden and wildflower meadow. Wildlife is abundant and, with farmland in front, the only disturbance are the cows. Both Crumble Cottage and Upper Crumble are fresh, airy, open-plan spaces painted in soft colours, with small-pane windows, wood shutters, thick walls and old beams. You get a basket of logs for the wood-burner, cosy rugs, comfy sofas and a galley kitchen with all you need (but there’s a Michelin-starred restaurant 5-minutes away). Up tiny carpeted stairs are bedrooms with big comfy beds and linen as light as air. If you stay at Upper Crumble you can book the Hot Tub Courtyard.

Reviews

Crumble Cottages are beautiful, very well equipped, comfortable, cosy and full of thoughtful touches. If you want to just wander and relax there are lovely gardens. Cartmel, just down the lane, has lovely places to eat .. don’t miss Unsworth’s Yard for amazing cheeses! Nearby Grange-over-Sands has lovely traditional shops and a promenade with views across Morecambe Bay! Sarah and Stewart’s energy and enthusiasm know no bounds, they clearly love their special corner of Cumbria, and love to share it with their guests! It’s perfect!

We have bearly been home 24 hours and we are missing Upper Crumble already! Sarah and Stewart are wonderfully warm people and made us feel at home from the moment we arrived. Upper Crumble has been lovingly designed and is perfectly formed. It has everything you need for a very relaxing and romantic stay. The location is peaceful (especially in the hot tub!) and you feel miles from anywhere yet you are only a short walk from the brilliant food on offer in Cartmel. A holiday in Upper Crumble is an opportunity which should not be missed.

We recently stayed in crumble cottage. What a beautiful place set in a charming part of the world. Ideally suited for exploring the Cartmel Peninsula and a sort walk from the village itself. Crumble cottage is superbly decorated with high end fixtures and fittings. The bathroom is one of the nicest we have stayed in. The kitchen is excellently equipped. Sarah and Stewart are extremely friendly and helpful. We would go there again tomorrow!

Dan, Midsomer norton

A gem of a place! So beautifully renovated with so many finishing touches. Perfect location - the tranquility being out of the village, yet walking distance to Cartmel. The hot tub was amazing & particularly therapeutic after climbing a mountain! Will definitely return!

Susan, Princes risborough

We stayed at Upper Crumble as part of our honeymoon and couldn't have chosen a more perfect place. The cottage itself is beautiful and so well-equipped with everything you could possibly need. The garden is gorgeous and we enjoyed eating our breakfast in the sunshine (especially the morning we looked up to see a pheasant walking past! The hot tub was a fab luxury. We look forward to coming back!

Kay, Leicester

Beautiful cottage with everything one could possibly want - well equipped kitchen, delightful bathroom, log burner and a huge bed with pillows like clouds. Sarah and Stewart are excellent and helpful hosts. Cartmel village a stroll away and the majestic lakes an easy drive. There are loads of nearby attractions, the village has great pubs and if it rains, hole up and enjoy a round of Scrabble, provided in the box of goodies. We'd thoroughly recommend this cottage.

A gorgeous cottage in a stunning location with amazing hosts. Thank you Sarah and Stewart for making our long weekend perfect. We cannot wait to visit again.

Kate, St helens

Cosy, comfortable and quirky .. with little thoughtful special touches which make you smile … you need to go to find out!! Smart shower room, and well equipped kitchen .. and super living space with a dining table by the huge window giving lots of natural light!! The gallery bedroom was lovely. We really liked the flowers and herbs right outside of our door …pretty and tasty too!! Stewart and Sarah are working incredibly hard making a special place for visitors, as well as a haven for wildlife; the gardens, ponds and cottages are a credit to them!! We didn't want to leave. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Upper Crumble cottage. The cottage has been restored to a very high standard and is a cosy, comfortable place to relax in after a day exploring. Cartmel is only a short walk away and has a good selection of places to eat while the lakes are only a drive away. I would highly recommend staying at Crumble cottages as I'm sure you will not be disappointed.

Upper crumble cottage is a truly stunning property in a peaceful location. Sarah and Stewart were the perfect hosts and nothing was too much trouble. A lot of love and attention has been put into the design of the cottage rennovation. Cartmel itself is gorgeous. There are lots of lovely places to eat / coffee shops / gift shops. This was my first trip to the Lake District and I thoroughly recommend staying at the cottages. We will definitely be returning. Thank you so much Sarah and Stewart! x

What's not to like? Upper Crumble is beautiful, comfortable, stylish. Should you choose to eat in, you can, with ease. Should you wish to eat out, there is plenty to choose from in Cartmel, which is within walking distance. You will sleep well and relax. The cottages are nestled in lovingly created grounds, tended to by Sarah and Stuart, who themselves go all out to ensure you have a great holiday in their home. if you can tear yourself aways from the immediate surroundings of the cottages, then the lakes are without a doubt a stunning landscape of natural beauty and great places to visit.

Kate, Edinburgh

A beautiful cottage in a great location (down the road from the lovely Cartmel). We would love to have seen the garden in full bloom in the summer, but it was a very cosy holiday home in the winter. The perfect place for our first visit to the Lake District.

Crumble Cottage was heaven. Perfect location to visit the West Coast and Southern Lakes and on our 4 night stay we certainly made full use of the ambience and location of the cottage. It was brilliant to be wakened in the morning by the Morning Bird Chorus. The cottage has been built to the highest standards and has everything you would want even a log burner. Nearby Cartmel has some wonderful restaurants serving great food and cask beers, don't miss a visit to the micro brewery and cheese shop. Cannot wait to revisit in near future.

Ian, Hazel grove. stockport

A brilliantly well thought out layout that perfectly blends the original features with all modern amenities, the photos don’t do it justice. We immediately felt relaxed and at home and couldn’t have wished for a better location as wonderfully peaceful but only five minutes from the centre of Cartmel. We booked the optional hot tub which was fantastic after a hard day hiking and really did add to the luxury feel. Sarah and Stewart are also the perfect hosts as lovely to chat to and get some recommendations but left you with plenty of privacy to enjoy what is an idyllic romantic break.

Shayne, Nottingham

Excellent.Great location and very accommodating owners...

Pete, Manchester

Stayed at Upper Crumble cottage and have to say that we could not fault the accommodation, location or weather. While the last of these can not be guaranteed for all visitors, the first two certainly are. I would not hesitate to recommend this place for a relaxing, luxury get away holiday. I suppose the best advert is return visits and we most certainly will be back.

Rob, Inverness

Beautiful place. Upper crumble so spacious yet cosy and beautiful decor. Very private and beautiful surroundings. Owners Stewart and Sarah so lovely and couldn't have been any nicer. Hot tub fabulous. Highly recommended I will be staying again. Thank you so much!

Camila, Denbigh

Perfection in miniature. This tiny cottage has everything you could want for a getaway romantic break. Great location, great facilities and welcoming and friendly hosts. We'll be back!

Phil, Glasgow

Our short break in Cartmel was fantastic & it was wonderful having such a beautiful, homely & luxurious place to base ourselves. Sarah & Stewart were so friendly & the little touches of a birthday message, wine, cake & fresh vegetables on arrival were really touching. Crumble Cottage is beautifully laid out & comfortable. The setting is stunning & quiet but within walking distance of all that Cartmel has to offer. We would highly recommend It to anyone looking for a lovely hideaway to relax in. We will definitely be returning!

Nancy, York

Crumble Cottage is a gorgeous place to stay just south of the Lake District. We enjoyed 4 days relaxing here on our mini-moon and we had such a great time. Ideally located within walking distance of the 2 Michelin star restaurant l'enclume in Cartmel village and just a 30 minute car ride away from the very best walks and scenic routes that the Lake District has to offer. Crumble cottage with its wood burner is a delight to come home to after a day walking the lakes and the hills of the Lake District and the bed is so super cosy that you will almost definitely have a great night's sleep!!
