The drive from the main road is stunning: narrow, twisty and with wide sensational views at every turn; you are in the quietest valley but still at 1,200 feet. Your cottage, like any well-loved family home, is crammed with original art (much painted by the owners), photographs, books, games, open fires; plenty to keep young and old happy. The kitchen is big, beamed and Aga-simmered; a squishy sofa at one end next to an overflowing bookcase ensures whoever cooks will have company. An open fire in the long sitting room with contemporary sofa and dark red walls keeps you cosy. All bedrooms are carpeted, freshly painted and have lots of paintings; views are heart-wrenching from each. You will not need your car: walk straight onto the fell from the cottage to Helvellyn, the Dodds and Gowbarrow, a 15-minute walk takes you to the village, its hotel and a roaring fire, or simply explore the 25-acres here. Gina and Richard, just next door if you need them, have planted 3,000 trees in memory of their daughter Lucy. With the Aira Beck running through it, paths to meander, and seats for pondering, it’s a very special place indeed.

We had a wonderful week in this beautiful location, celebrating a special birthday as a family, with six-months-old baby and two dogs. Very warm, spacious and comfortable - and peaceful. Wonderful walks in Lucy's Wood and beyond, and all the facilities we could possibly need. Thank you!

We had a simply wonderful time staying a week at this magnificent cottage in the most beautiful of vallleys. The views were extraordinary, matched by the kindness and generousity of our hosts Richard and Gina. We were especially privileged to be guests, on a superb summer’s evening, at a concert held in Lucy’s wood - a very special place. Gina’s paintings - found in the cottage and in the local pub - are a great inspiration. They well reflect this very unique place.

Back for our 3rd visit. Crookwath is our home from home, welcomed by its warmth, the Aga, lit wood burner on arrival & Richard's homemade Biscuits. The most homliest cottage we have ever stayed in. It suits us all, some of us prefer reading and painting & I can walk the fells direct from the front door. We've enjoyed using the BBQ at the Barn in Lucy's Wood and dared go wild swimming in Gina's "special" place in Aira Beck. We just love the tranquility and peace of this place, not a sound apart from nature. We've been car free all week...just no need to go anywhere, this is a heavenly place.

"The weather has been wild with wind, snow and sunshine! Bringing our supplies in by sled will be a very fond memory. We've been warm and cosy in Crookwath - I love the Aga."

As soon as I hit the Crookwath web site I knew this was the right place for us. What a relief after all those blind alleys. And when we arrived the pictures were even more truthful than they were on the web. We were welcomed like friends and our hosts wanted to do everything to make our holiday a happy one. We will be back and we will pass on the good news but really we would like to keep this place a secret.
