Sleeps 8

Twist along ever narrower country lanes to arrive at this renovated wooden structure, tucked under the main house, with uninterrupted views over the river and the woods below. It’s ramshackle and perfectly tranquil.Step inside to find hand-crafted and vintage furniture, Victorian bathroom fittings and lots of nautical artefacts collected by owner Greg, a sculptor and master woodworker. You eat by the huge French windows which lead onto a veranda; magic on balmy nights with a barbecue. One of the bedrooms is in an old railway carriage – lovely for a couple wanting a bit of space and cosy with its own wood-burner.You can hire a boat and spend time exploring the estuary, wild swimming, fishing or just messing about. Fun to gather up a picnic, pile in the boat and find a pebbly cove to rest in. You’ve four acres of woodland to trample through too.

This is a magical place. We were a family of 3 generations staying ages from 2 to 60. The setting is remote and in 8 acres of shrubs and trees and hydrangeas running down to the Helford River with its own boathouse and slipway. You can watch the ebb and flow of the tidal river and the sun going down each evening with nothing to disturb you. No noise or traffic or light. We ate outside every night on the veranda . The house has wear and age but this adds to its charm. This is not a house full of gadgets. Thank you Greg (the owner) for a memorable stay.

The neighbourhood

Tremerlin is set in 8 acres of private woodland. The closest village is Helford, half a mile away, where you’ll find a village store and pub, the Shipwright Arms. Helston 11 miles away has a wide range of shops, supermarkets and restaurants. At Sailaway St Anthony, around 4 miles, you can charter a boat to moor at the property and historic Falmouth is a 20-minute drive.

Local points of interest from Greg Powlesland

  • Great food and atmosphere at the Shipwrights Arms in Helford, a 20-minute walk – or The Greenhouse at St Keverne and the Ship Inn Mawgan for organic & gourmet food.
  • The tender to Greg and Katie's 1920s yacht Patna featured in the older Swallows and Amazons film. Hire boats from sailaway – they'll deliver to the quay – and explore the tide. Explore beaches on the lower Helford 20 minutes from the quay.
  • The coastal path crosses by ferry at Helford, an area of scientific interest, and National Trust walks surround Tremerlin, including Frenchmans Creek. The farmland of ancient Kessel Barton now houses an art gallery in a restored barn, 10 mins.away.
  • Take in the beach and rock formations at Kynance Cove and the lighthouse at the Lizard – remarkable landscape of unspoilt charm. Excellent food at the Housal Bay Hotel and ancient Cadgwith – music sessions Tues and Fri.
  • Tremerlin is a haven for wildlife – deer, stoats, peregrine falcons, greencrests and kingfishers. Whale and dolphin sighting trips from Falmouth. Traverse glades of ferns, magnolia, camellia and honeysuckle-festooned oaks to end up at the impressive quay.
  • Visit Constantine's Tolman Centre for theatre (and the world-famous whiskey supplier opposite) and Newlyne Filmhouse for movies - book yourself for supper. Hit St Ives for the Tate and exquisite beaches, for ancient mines, see South Crofty.
