‘A jewel in the palm of your hand’, wrote Daphne du Maurier of Trelowarren. It remains one of Cornwall’s finest estates. The entrance drive brings you in past a long row of evergreen Holm oaks that emerge from an ancient Cornish ‘hedge’. The main house, 500 years old, belongs to the Vyvyan family and is at the heart of this vast project. There’s a gorgeous swimming pool, a spa treatment centre, the courtyard restaurant and a pop-up pizza house in the old stables; the whole place is yours to explore. These old estate houses have been handsomely restored to be as modern as possible inside, and they are just around the corner from the courtyard and the newly-converted restaurant. (Here you might linger all day, so exquisite and cosy is it.) The estate is a wonderful place for families – deep in the great outdoors yet so close to much else. The lush south coast is nearby, the Helford River too; the Lizard wraps around Trelowarren, and Penzance is a short drive away. Neither adults nor children can fail to enjoy themselves here; it is a paradise for those who love Cornwall.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Kerenza Cooksey

  • The Lizard is a wonderful place to stay. It is a hidden corner of Cornwall that means that even in the height of the summer, you won't be meeting hoards of people on the beaches, or in Trelowarren
  • Trelowarren is 10 minutes drive from over 14 different beaches, that's a different one every day for a fortnight. You can find one sheltered from the wind, with sand for sand castles, with rock pools for investigating, with streams for damming.... and more
  • We are surrounded by lovely gardens to visit at all times of the year. From March with the camellias, through to the Autumn splendour with all of the hydrangeas, you will find native and exotic planting all around South West Cornwall
