The Chapel

Gorran Haven, Cornwall

An atmospheric, soaring chapel in a tiny South Cornwall hamlet, 5 minutes from gorgeous beaches

3 bedrooms

Sleeps 8

Standing surrounded by fields for more than 200 years this Wesleyan-then-Methodist chapel has been rebuilt from near-ruin with colour, sensitivity and soul. Cooking in the big farmhouse kitchen is easy (you’ll find all the basics and some treats) and everyone can congregate in the vast, full-height living room – kids may recast the original pulpit as a stage, a double decker bus, the bridge of a pirate ship…

There’s just room for a barbecue outside the back door but the space indoors means no one will feel cooped up, and you can get your garden fix five minutes’ drive away at the Lost Gardens of Heligan.

Choose between some fab beaches close by and you’ll find all the clobber you need from sandcastle-building kit to wetsuits and surfboards right here to borrow. Round off a day at the nearest spot, Caerhays, with live jazz or open air cinema at its great beach café.

Brilliant place. Close to a lot of beautiful places. Highly recommend visiting the lost Gardens of Heligan, Mevagissey and the small beach by the castle nearby. The chapel had everything we needed and more. Additional stuff available like fishing gear, surfing gear and beach toys. The kids loved it.. they had so much fun hiding and playing 'it' in the huge main room. Good communication from the owners too. Thank you very much!

The neighbourhood

In the remote hamlet of Gorran High Lanes in South Cornwall, The Chapel is surrounded by farmland, but 5 minutes’ drive from the wonderful Caerhays Beach and Castle, with alternative sandy stretches at Hemmick and Vault a further 5 minutes. For curio shops, restaurants and real ale pubs, the colourful fishing village of Mevagissey is two miles distant.

Local points of interest from William Asbury

  • Caerhays beach and castle has a great beach cafe with live jazz nights and an open cinema. You can also explore the castle and gardens featuring one of the countries most extensive magnolia collections. Check the calendar to see what's on.
  • At just 5 minutes drive, The Lost Gardens of Heligan are well worth a visit. These stunning botanical gardens are open all year round & great for families. Explore the sub tropical valley and walled gardens, whilst kids build dens & go on adventure trails.
  • Also very close are Hemmick and Vault beaches. These secluded beaches make great starting points for coastal walks. Hike to the historic Dodman's point and enjoy epic panoramic views of the coast line. Alternatively, you can just relax on the quiet beaches
  • Called by some the 8th wonder of the world, The Eden Project is not to be missed. The world famous biomes house 3 artificial environments, the largest containing a functioning rainforest ecosystem! You can also take a zip line over the whole valley!
  • Explore the traditional Mevagissey fishing village with its array of curio shops, real ale pubs and restaurants. I reccomend al voradas or salamandas! For a traditional Cornish cream tea, Melinsey mill tea rooms in Veryan is the place to go.
  • For the more adventurous, hire bikes in Pentewan and ride around the forest trails. We also have many wetsuits, surfboards and body boards with unlimited free use. You can surf locally, however head to Newquay or Watergate bay for more consistent surf!

William Asbury

William Asbury’s family have a passion for converting old buildings and The Chapel has been a labour of love since they found it with its roof caved in a couple of decades back. They love coming here themselves but you’ll generally be in the hands of the excellent housekeeper, who’ll leave you in peace.
