Cornwall at its most quintessential: tucked into a little cove on the southern bank of the River Helford, just a kayak’s paddle away from Frenchman’s Creek and the hamlet of Gillan. The Boathouse is the nearest thing to a boat without actually being on the sea – but with the waves lapping at the deck you won’t have far to go to dip a toe in Cornish waters.Bring your own craft along for a holiday and use the private slipway, or walk over to the neighbouring village of St Antony at low tide and hire for the week – they’ll deliver direct to the beach. You may be hiring the house but you’ll want to spend most of your time outside, messing about with fishing nets, rockpooling and leaping in and out of boats (the drying room for wetsuits comes in handy).Owner Suzy designed the house for big family gatherings: a pot big enough for lobsters, a huge games room, two dishwashers for efficient clean up after home-cooked dinners. Outside it’s real Swallows and Amazons stuff, but inside there’s a log burner and superfast Wi-Fi.

We had a fab time thank you. You have a beautiful home and we thoroughly enjoyed our time there. Only complaint that it wasn’t long enough. Leonie and Neil cooked us an amazing meal on Saturday and we all dressed up appropriately. Thanks for the recommendation. Thanks once again for sharing your house with us.

The Boathouse is an amazing place, with a wonderful view over the sea and the beach below. The house is very spacious and comfortable with exceptional attention to detail. Two dishwashers was quite a talking point and very useful. We stayed as a family party of adults and young children and all loved the place. There are plenty of places to visit not too far away, but we actually spent most of our the time relaxing, enjoying the view and rock pooling on the beach with the children. Now working out how soon we can get back there.

The neighbourhood

Coastal walks start from the beach and run along the banks on either side of house – famously accommodating local café Fat Apples is down the footpath in Saint Keverne, which has a butcher and a baker (though no candlestick maker) and a handful of sweet little shops and pubs set around a pretty square. The villages of Helford and Manaccan have more restaurants, including much-lauded South Café (scallops, mackerel, local veg).

Local points of interest from Suzy Goulding

  • Boat hire (sailing, motor, kayak) and moorings from St Anthony. Hired boats can be delivered to the beach or you can walk over at low tide.
  • 2 Tennis courts available for hire in Manaccan (5 mins by car).
  • The house is on the coastal path so there are fabulous walks from the doorstep.
  • Tate Modern. National Maritime Musuem, Seal Sanctuary, Flambards are all within an hours drive as are a number of stunning gardens including Trebah.
  • 2 High Chairs and 2 Cots provided upon request.
  • Owner provides a list of tried and tested recommendations of pubs, restaurants, places to visit and things to do in the immediate area when you book.

Suzy Goulding

Suzy Goulding and her two sons have tried and tested every inch of The Boathouse over the last 20 years, expanding and updating along the way to keep up with their ever-growing family. Suzy’s a keen sailor of dinghies and yachts and can recommend all the best places nearby for a pootle; when you book she’ll divulge all the best pubs, restaurants and ice cream shops, but otherwise you’re left to your own devices.
